Angry 1996 Continental

OK....Had transmission flushed. and Gasket replaced and cleaned out.

Left shop and Check Engine Light came on.

Went back to shop on reco of friend that they knocked loose a sensor or vacuum hose -- no help.

Check ODBII code and got 'Bank 2 error'. Erased code and then it came back in a few minutes of driving. Erased again....same code..same problem.

Car stops on idle sometimes..not stops..computer shuts it down. Car sputters forward at stoplights like it's trying to go.....and in the morning it does the same thing.....I have to rev up to 2000 or 2500 to get it to warm up so I can drive it in the town. On the highway..no problem.

I need to know what to tell the mechanic....maybe save me some diagnostic money.....did they knock loose my oxygen sensor..how do I tell.....is it vacuum...how do I tell...........someone told me to check another sensor called...uhm.....'IAL sensor'..I don't know..some other sensor for air flow ....something that would make the computer shut the engine down.

Can anyone help....also...ALOT HERE!....squeeking noise real bad....in the engine area....sounds like a belt, but someone looked at my belt and said it didn't look that bad.....tensioner?....how do I tell?????

Re: 1996 Continental

I don't know about your sensors, but the 1995 Lincolns are the same, and-in general-most late model Ford products I have owned have had tensioner pulley problems. When they first start to wear out, they squeal in the morning or when it's cold then the noise goes away.

I just had to replace the serpentine belt on mine, and fortunately the tensioner is still okay. I will tell you that if you have to replace the tensioner, take your time replacing the belt. There is very little room to work with on these cars since the motor is so huge. I had to remove my radiator resivoir and my power steering resivoir to gain access to the tensioner. I also had to remove the passenger tire and pop out the panel on the inner fender to guide the new belt in and around the tensioner. If the tensioner is bad, this would be the right time to replace it. Some auto parts stores have them, some don't. The last one I got was from a salvage yard, but it worked.

Good luck!

Re: 1996 Continental

The check engine light could be alot of things If you could give me a specific code it would narrow things down! But the unwillingness to idle could be a vaccuum leak or most likely a sticking ISC mtr (Idle Speed Control mtr =ISC mtr) (IAL IAC ) Also the noise just might be a whistle from a vaccuum leak (Could be !)
