Reliability of Audi's.

Greetings and salutations

I am looking at buying a new car(not used) and have a few cars in mind, one of which is the Audi S4. I know it's being revampd, I'm hearing rumors that'll be out 2003 maybe 2004(I can wait). Question is:o just how dependable is the Audi? When I buy a brand new car I'll have it for at least 10 yrs or so. So I do not want to waste money in repairs. I have always owned Honda's and currently have 226k miles on my 89 Accord. So I have some reservations about Audi, that's because I'm just now getting into Audi's and have little knowledge of them. What I am learning is that Audi is makes sweet cars and the S4's got my attention.

Oh and one of the other cars is BMW M3.

Thanks for any replies.

It always depends on the way you drive it , do you sevice it properly , do you make many engine mods etc. Normally it will last long , i have almost 80 000 Kms on my S8 and i do nothing but oil changes and services...

AUdi is much better in the reliability dept. then it was in the 80s. It should last you an good 200k miles with proper maintenance. However they are not making S4s right now so your out of luck until they revamp it.

Whoever said the 80s Audis weren't reliable? I have a 86 4000 quattro and the odometer stopped at 200,000. I'm sure it has much more. Never had any problems with it. Audis are reliable.

My thoughts exactly. I have a '94 S4 right now with 127,000 miles on the odo and no problems. My first car was a '90 100 quattro. I sold that car with 260,000 miles on it. No problems whatsoever. I also have two friends with Audis. One has a '89 80 with 315,000 miles. the other has a '92 100 with 225,000. People have misconceptions about older Audis. They are just as reliable (if not moreso) as the new ones.

There has been an image that Audi are unreliable, however, now they have turned around that image with the creation of reliable products.

Supposedly, pre "A" audis (the ones before they started being named like A6, A8, A4, etc) are unreliable, especially in the 80's, after that, they became very reliable, almost like BMW or Benz.

Well...

If you are looking for a really reliable car that will last for ever, buy an old Mercedes-Benz (pre-1996) Diesel, and that will last you the rest of your life. My dad has had 3, one went at 437k (sold to my aunt, who kept it till 510k, when it was rear ended by a Peterbilt), one at 617k, and he was given $5k for it (10 yrs old) because my moms Yugo went and they decided to get cars at the same time, and the current one, with 410k and still going strong. Audis are comparable to other current German cars in these areas, not to be confused with old school, over-engineered Mercedes. The new ones are actually a little inferior to Audi in most quality-related areas.
