L98 Swap

I was just wondering if i swapped and 88 L98 from a firebird into to my 87 iroc 305 tpi, would i be able to just bolt it up and turn the key, or would i have to change the wire harness and ecm, along with a better flowing fuel pump, whatever else is needed?

Re: L98 Swap

The L98 is a 350 correct? If it is I can only assume that you would have to change the wiring harness and ECM cause I think the stock computer would freak out if it was hooked up to a 350. Like I said I am just guessing so maybe someone else can give you some better information.

Re: L98 Swap

You might just have to change the ECM since the 305 TPI should have all the same sensors and stuff but im not positive.

Re: L98 Swap

yeah you also might need another fuel pump since the injectors on the 350 need more gas. Also the ECM... I'm not sure about the wiring though... I think TPI wiring harnesses are the same regardless of engine size but again, not 100% sure.. thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Re: L98 Swap

The harness and the computer (ECM) are the same..... the only thing you need to change is the PROM (chip). You can interchange computers (ECMs are all the same), just not the PROMs...

Fuel pump will be fine too...

Thats what i'm talking about, i'm doing the swap next year around tax season. With that refund, i'm gonna get 9-bolt from the 3rd gens, the L98, and a bunch of other goodies to go along with. Now, i'm just gonna correct the problems i have, get exhaust and headers, suspension upgrade, and some tranny upgrades aswell.

u may be confusing the chevy 9-bolt w/ the ford 9inch, the ford 9inch is a bullet proof rearend, the 9-bolt chevy is a joke dude... if u wanna good chevy rearend u gotta go w/ a 12-bolt. ur car right now prolly has a 9-bolt already if not a 10bolt, if its a 10-bolt u would be downgrading...

Re: Re: L98 Swap

Its not a chevy 9-bolt, its a Borg & Warner 9-bolt... which were standard equipment in all L98s because of their high torque rating... Actually the B/W 9-bolts are supposed to be as strong as a Dana-44.

The Borg & Warner 9-bolt is an upgrade above the GM 10-bolt rear...

i haven't personally had experience, but i've heard that l98's with only slight mods blew their 9-bolts all the time... just made me assume they weren't as good as 10-bolts...

Not all of the TPI ECM's are the same.
The 870 ECM was 1985 ONLY
The 165 ECM 1986-1989
The 730 ECM 1990-1992
And there were some pretty big changes made in 1989, like the loss of the cold start valve (9th injector). So you'd have to disable that system if you were to put an 89 PROM (Calpack) in it.
