Question No Trailer Brake Lights on 89 Toyota Pick-up

I am new to this forum, and would appreciate any help that someone could provide me.

I have an 89 Toyota pick-up that I pull a 5x10 trailer .The wiring is a common 4 wire flat hoppy connector.
The marker lights all work on the trailer, the left and right turn signals both work fine, but the brake lights will not come on to the trailer.
Standing behind the truck I can see both brake lights working on the truck, but not on the trailer.I ran a common external ground between the truck and trailer to eliminate any ground gremlin problems.

Can anyone help point me to the problem?

Thanks,

You'll need to purchse the converter hook up kit for the Toyota since the brake lights and turn signals use two separate bulbs or lighting units!!

I would check first with a trailer supply company and if they don't have one, you will more than likely have to pay the dealership price; but you will be getting a good quality part.

Most all your local auto parts stores should have them in stock. It is a common item that is needed when hooking up trailer lights on a vehicle with seperate bulbs for turn signals and brake lights!!

Warning! I wouldn't get a trailer light adapter from your "friendly toyota dealer". I bought one, at an expensive price, and finally wanted to use it about a year later and it didn't work. I think it was because of cheap conectors. I bought one from a trailer supply store, hard wired it (soldered it on) and had no problems since. Just something to think about.
