Put your key in the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position (don't crank). Let it sit for 10 minutes. That should reset the Passlock security system and allow you to start it. If it keeps happening, you have a bad Passlock system.

Re: 1999 Grand am (SE) won't start!!! Security light!

welcome to the forum, krikette. Here's how you do the security relearn:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.

2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.

3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)

4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.

5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.

6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes to complete.

Good luck.

I've had to do this several times except I just left the key in the on position until the security light stopped flashing (around 10 minutes) turned it to off and then It would crank right up.Dealership ende up replacing the ignition switch and it hasn't done it anymore. But I have started having fuel pump issues and just replaced the fuel pump today. I think the 2001 GrandAms are lemons and I'll NEVER own another!

I have a 99 Grand Am If you turn the key to the on position without starting it and press the gas pedal three consecutive times the light will go off. (you have to press it completely to the floor each time)

Thumbs up Re: 1999 Grand am (SE) won't start!!! Security light!

Security light was flashing this morning! I got on the net and found info from a number of sites, including this one, about turning your key into the ignition to ACC, wait 10 minutes or so, till the light stops flashing. I went out about 7 minutes later, LIGHT WAS NOT FLASHING !! IT DID WORK! This time anyway.
