10" or 12" subs???

I just bought a OCTANE-R 15.0:1 amp and I am now looking for 2 x subs to install in a sealed enclosure in my 93 Honda Civic hatchback. I listen to rap and rock so I’m looking for boom and punch in a SQ or SQL set up. And I was wondering about the Phoenix Gold Xenon subs.

So question is….in a hatchback for rap and rock music, should I install a pair of 10” or 12” subs, and what subs would match my requirements based on a 1000W x 1 @ 2 ohms amplifier. Thanks for you advice in advance.

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

You want a pair of 500rms single 4ohm or dual 2ohm subs, there are a bunch of options. I would personally go with a pair of 12s because I believe a pair of 10's is a huge waste of money unless you're dealing with incredibly tight space requirements (which you aren't with a hatch). A pair of med-high output 12's in a nice sealed box should do you well. What kind of budget are you dealing with?

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

My tastes, I like a good high end 10" driver. I personally like how they behave when properly put in a system. So, I'd recomend 2-10"s in a ported box firing towards the rear glass or 2 12's facing the same way but in a sealed box. Something like this would look awsome painted to match the car.

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

would you consider a single sub setup?

a single SX 12 from www.reaudio.com would work well for rap and rock.. and dont worry about SPL. im sure one 12 is louder than a lot of dual sub setups youve heard

pair of SE 12s would work nicely as well.. although for either RE product you would have to order the other VC config they offer.

sound splinter rl-p 12s

IDMAX 12s..

there are a bunch of subs that would work well.. but whats your budget?

those PG subs are pretty good too from what ive heard

also, nice car man

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

2 Ohms not one!!!! I'd call up RE and have them make you a dual 4 ohms SX 15. It would be loud as hell and still sound pretty good in a low tuned ported box.

Thanks for all your input. I don't really want to spend more than $450 for the pair of subs. I am going to build a false floor set up, so subs would be positioned straight up....if this makes a difference in what I should get?

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

nah, sealed is for the uber-sexy sound masters

so, $225 for a 500rms single 4ohm or dual 2ohm sub and you listen to rap and rock. Well for rock sealed will be better, and for rap ported will be better. I would recommend getting a pair of 12's to keep the displacement up and going sealed, then if you don't think the output or low end is strong enough for you then you can go ported with it. You would end up wasting about $35 for the sealed box if it came to that, but at least you would know you ended up with the right choice.

As for the subs, you have a few choices, something like an ascendant avalanche, image dynamics idq, etc

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

Why not a 15..... your paying almost double for 1/5 more displacement.

Re: 10" or 12" subs???

Ported and tuned low = best for my ears for most music...
sealed is for people who like to waste energy with an inefficent enclsore when similar results can be had from an enclsore twice as efficent... :P
