Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
Are you sure that there is no dip stick? Usually it is located toward the back of the engine, they can be hard to see. I have never heard of an automatic trans without a stick. If it is there look for a red handle or even a small black ring I'm not sure which is in the 01 model, the oil stick is usually yellow and the trans stick is usually red. I hope this helps, but there should be one there I will be very supprised if it is not there.

Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
There are no dipsticks on the new trannies. You have to get under the car. Remove a "level check" bolt. If fluid drips out, the level is fine, if none drips out, you have to top it up. Very dumb set up. Very smart way to raise revenue. Get a Chilton or haynes manual for the proper procedure. Sad, sad GM...

Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
Thanks Marc, That is a really BAD set up. I don't believe they did that, how stupid is that? You can't even check the fluid level...something that the manufacturers have preached since the invent of the auto tranny. I just wonder how many how many tranny claims are going to be dis-allowed due to low fluid levels.
How can they go from putting a dip stick on my 96 GT with a manual tranny to not having a dip stick on an automanic, makes no sense, AT ALL. Any way I thank you for the info, now I know and if the oppertunity comes up I'll know not to look for a dip stick on the newer models. What's next...a sight glass on the gas tank? |

Quote:
The no dipstick set up is a huge pain... Especially if you end up with a leak, you have no clue how much has gone out and how much too add. The worst part the GT's are so low to the ground you can't crawl under and check it through that valve thing... cuz the car has to be level....

They are setup that way because the new transmissions are pressurized and a dipstick won't let it pressurize.

Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
That's BS...no one can tell me that the eggheads that design these cars with all of the computer controlled items and such could not come up with a way for the fluid to be checked with out having to get under the car. If the system is pressurized they should be able to put a sensor on the system that would tell the driver the level of the fluid just by the amount of pressure from the amount of fluid. If the pressure is "X" with the proper amount of fluid them if the system is a pint low then the pressure would be changed and this could be a very accurate reading.
Sorry to rant on the subject but I still find it hard to beleive...No Dipstick how insane is that? |

Go buy a new car my neighbors sister got a saturn. She was having tranny trouble. Called the dealer and they told her and I quote its a stupid design no dipstick no sensor no real way with out going under the car to check the fluid level. And that it came out of one of the employees mouths at the dealer.

Did anybody know where this plug (to check the transmission level) is, and what tool you can remove it with?

Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
check bolt is on the passanger side just below where the right drive axle connects to the transmission and it is going to be on the side of the axle that is closer to the radiator.
what you need to do: start the engine and let it idle for 3 min, during that time shift into all gears and pause in each gear for 3 seconds. Pull e-brake, raise the car and secure it on jack stands, do not turn off the engine. You will have to remove and install the bolt while the engine is running or you will loose a lot of atf. So engine is idling, bolt is removed if you see oil coming out that means that the oil was overfilled. Once the oil stops to drip out that will be the correct level. Now, if you don't see oil dripping and is bellow the check hole put some oil in, and if you overfill it wait till it stops dripping then close the check hole. |

Re: transmission check on a 01 Grand am gt
Speaking of these transmission without dipsticks.Chrysler has transmissions with a dipstick without a dipstick having a cover saying Dealer only.A special dipstick from Miller tool is needed with a scan tool hooked up.Chrysler has it up to check the fluid level by the tempature of the fluid and go by a chart. This special dipstick is about $72.00 for it from Miller tool.My mother's 2006 Chrysler 300 is this way.
