98 TransPort ABS light lit when driving

I read in the manual that i should pull over and turn off engine , then restart to reset the light. However my ABS light continues to come on. Not flashing, but a solid stay on. Is this serious or maybe a sensor problem?

No problem just your abs is not in effect so when you skid you will not get that crap shudder on the brake, I don't like ABS and my system is out and the light stays on and that is just fine with me.

The light being on indicates a fault in the system somewhere. Could be minor. Could be significant.

So its no big deal, but should I have it looked at? The only concern I have is that I travel on the weekends alot. This weekend I'll put over 1000 miles on and I'm concerned if this will give me a problem.

Re: 98 TransPort ABS light lit when driving

I agree with Illerad that the ABS light ON is a relief sign in as much as ABS itself is concerned. THis ABS is not a big deal and when if finaly fails, phasing it OUT (that is, just forget and if you cannot stand the light, pull it off or disconnect the light driver) is the way to go. But other than the ABS main unit, a problem with wheel bearings and wheel sensors will inhibit the ABS. If it is "just" a sensor, then no problem again. But often the sensor failure is linked to wheel bearing failure. Having a scan would show detail of where the signal comes from, like left front wheel...or from he ABS unit itself.... But DO NOT fall in the trap of having your ABS system replaced or restored at high price. It is not worth it. If a wheel bearing is involved, sooner or later you will start hearing - and you will HEAR it, and FEEL it - a humming noise....but it can go a L O N G way between time of suspicion, detection and............replacement.
The ABS system is just an ADD-ON to the standard braking system: without the ABS, you still have a fully functional nominal braking system.

To saftely dis-engage the ABS system, remove the ABS actuator fuse only.
