budget racer...look guys need some direction please read
ok i have a 91 gsx that i have recently been upgrading. i have so far a arp head studs,2.5 turbo back exhaust, straight line performance uip kit, joe p manual boost controller and no interior, hacked maf, walbro 255lph, a/f ratio gauge, need to buy another boost gauge. so far i have ran an estimated 12.9 in the 1/4 with an open header.
my plan is to make this one of the fastest stock turbo cars. since it is a budget racer...i want to spend as little and get as much hp as i can. here are my next plans- major lightining(pulling out everything that i can), replace head gasket(since it is blown), port and polish the head, 2 g manifold, fuel reg.,...i am thinking of maybe going with an srt-4 intercooler since it can handle more power than i can make and they are dirt cheap, making my own intercooler piping. bigger wires and colder plugs, royal purple tranny fluid. if i am missing anything let me know...what else can i do that is cheap or free... need some feedback..thanks! |

I wouldnt waste any of your "budget" on head work, maybe just some mild casting flash cleanup while its being rebuilt. The stock turbo cant even begin to challenge the head's flow capacity in stock form. If you are running race gas you can easily max out the turbo before you get knock. It will be all about weight, traction, and driver skill. If this is pump gas, you need serious intercooling, and anything that will increase airflow without raising boost (cams, intake manifold, etc). I'm going to assume you are using high octane leaded fuel. Intercooling is still important, a cheap FMIC solution like the one you mention sounds like it will do the trick (provide enough intercooling for race gas use and fit in a smaller budget). Tuning will be key. Get AFR squared away, and be smart about ignition timing (dont get carried away trying to squeeze out that last .001 second and pop another head gasket).
Etc. For what its worth, I've seen 1Gs run 12.5s with just a pump, hacked MAS, boost controller, exhaust/filter, on race gas and ~24 psi.

good deal..thanks for the input...i actually will be doing the port and polish my self so it will cost me nothing. i have yet to run in on leaded gas, 105 octane unleaded. should i try running the leaded higher octane, since i don't care about the o2 sensors? also is there anything else that i can harm running the leaded juice? there will be no pump gas in this car. it will be a trailer queen. will the srt-4 intercooler be enough? mopar stage 3 puts out 380 to the wheels on a stock intercooler, but i have read where many have changed out the intercooler as one of their 1st mods. any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

I Think any FMCI is better than the stock SMIC, and poeple have run 11s on that. The sensors will survive leaded fuel, as long as they have had ~1000 miles of pump gas run through them. Nothing will be affected except a cat, which I assume you wont be running. The high octane (~117) leaded fuels are much more knock resistant than the unleaded race fuels.

You have plenty of input, and this discussion is nothing new. What questions haven't been answered?
