HELP!!! I'm Stumped, she's smokin
OK here's the deal. My 1988 caprice started to smoke the other day upon start up in the morning. She actually started and eventually died the first time within 10 seconds, then smoked the second time. once she warmed up the smoke disapeared and run fine. It's been like that for a week now. I thought it was a blown head gasket but i tested it out the only way i know how, I pressure tested the coolant system. There were no leaks to be seen and no mixture between oil and antifreeze. So i have no clue what it is. Somebody suggested to me that it could be the valve seals, but im not sure. The only info that i can think of that may have contributed to something is that i switched over to mobil 1 fully sinthetic oil. I don't know if that info helps with a diagnosis or not. Any help would be thankfull.

Re: HELP!!! I'm Stumped, she's smokin
I think you've found your own problem. The valve seals are known for leaking. Using a synthetic oil like you have will only make any leaks in all of the seals worse.
That Mobil1 is so good at finding leaks, it will actually work its way out of the drain plug in my W41.

Re: Re: HELP!!! I'm Stumped, she's smokin
Could be your choke pulloff valve is rotted and not working right. That would make you get blue smoke for about 1 or 2 minutes until the electric choke finally opens the choke plate fully. I had this exact problem on my 85. I was getting blue smoke for about 2 minutes after startup. New choke pulloff fixed it. $12.99
