Re: 1997 Pa

Not sure about the newer models, but for the longest time OBD I, 41 was the cam circuit/ecm code.

What led you having it scanned? Problem?

If the cam sensor starts reporting readings that out of normal range, it normally won't trip the check engine light, the ecm gets the majority of the information from the crank sensor for iginition timing and fuel purposes. Although, on the newer models I do think the cam has become a lot more involved in the process.

What is strange however, the code should be more like a "P_ _ _" P being powertrain system, then the DTC #? A stright up 41 pertains to OBD I?

not sure obd 1 or 2 but one code 41 i looked up on the internet pertains to crank sensor, coil, etc. but the mech said that the 41 meant the gas cap was bad or there was a small air leak from the tank to where ever.don't quote me on any of this,as i am not a mech.
does anyone have the obd1 and 2 codes? please email me.

Again, DTC 41 is a OBD I (begain phasing out in 1994 due to EPA standards) and pertains to the camshaft position sensor circuit. So, unless you have mistyped the year of your vehicle, forget about because it does not apply.

For a 1997 GM OBDII powertrain (1996 models to present), all trouble codes start with "P" for powertrain, followed by 4 digit identifiers.

Using your explanation from your mechanic that there is a "leak in the tank or bad gas cap" I would expect to have seen one of the following DTC codes:

P0440 - EVAP system
P0442 - EVAP control system - SMALL LEAK DETECTED (!!!!!)
P0452 - Fuel tank pressure circuit - low voltage
P0453 - Fuel tank pressure circuit - high voltage

Code P

I took my car to a near town with an Autozone and tested the car again.
This time it was free. I got the code and it reads as follows P1441 saying the perge canister or perge valve. Then it also said MISFIRE on Cylinder 5. The person at autozone said try replacing the plugs and plugwires, being they were factory and never changed, empty the perge canister, then see if that fixes it.Then if not replace the perge valve $16.99 great price.
Any comments welcome
P.S. it is OBDII
Also, does anyone know where the purge canister is located?

Re: 1997 Pa

ah hah,

P1441 - EVAP System flow during non purge.

Not sure of the 97, but historicly the charcoal canister is under the air intake nozzle/filter assy. in the left front fender.

Got It

Being the code reader also said misfire on cylinder #5 and the wires looked factory,I took a chance and changed the plugs and wires.
Once I did that, when i started the car, I heard something that sounded like the fuel pump and then the car ran great. This also turned off the SES light.
I talked to a friend who works on cars and he said that sometimes a misfire can cause the excess fuel to dump into the purge canister, and will cause the P1441 code. Once I changed the plugs and wires it fixed the misfire and allowed the purge valve to dump the excess fuel back into the tank.
I assume the noise I thought was the fuel pump was actually the perge valve doing it's job.
Thanks for all the help.
