head swap question

im new to the whole honda engine thing and just want to verify some information that I have heard. The computers on 96 and above civics cant really be tuned or it has very little effect right? And if i buy a non-vtec LX or DX or HX civic I can find a set of EX vtec heads and put them on my LX DX or HX motor right? And this is called a mini-me swap? Do I change the computer of something for it? what else should be done in a modification like this? Any other hints or suggestions would be usefull. Thanks.
