Wheel Bearing

While riding with me a few weeks back, a friend told me it felt like /sounded like my right front wheel bearing was coming loose. but when i jacked up the front end, both the front wheels have the same amount of play, so how else do i tell? also, how much play are u supposed to have in the front wheels? a little, or none at all? thanks

Make, Model, Year, 4X4 or 2WD? Any tire wear? Describe the noise. Are you confusing front end play with bearing slop?

Re: Wheel Bearing

You may not feel play in this type of bearing all the time. One way I use to help me is when I drive I sway vehicle from side to side to see if the noise changes. If it does you can be sure it is a bearing. This will also help show which side is bad.

sorry... 1997 chevy blazer 4X4 with 150k miles. not much tire wear ive had BFgoodrich AT's on there for about a year now. i couldnt hear a noise, but a friend said it sounded like they were, but another said they were fine. i tried the steering side to side trick and i dont hear anything myself.. but perhaps i dont have an ear for that kind of thing. when i had the blazer jacked up, i jus grabbed the tires and shimmied them and they moved jus a little bit. i jus wondered if they were supposed to move AT ALL, or jus be totally locked in.

Re: Wheel Bearing

Well no really shouldn't have any play. But you need to look closely as to where the play is coming. For instance if you had bad ball joint you might see that as play.

Re: Wheel Bearing

I wonder about the swaying side to side thing.

I thought I had a wheel bearing going bad on the front passenger side, when I would steer to the left and put more pressure on that tire it made noise like .... well... it was the wheel bearing noise.

I changed it, but the same exact noise is still there. I don't have a clue what it is. No one else knows either, even had a couple mechanics take a look, just one of those mystery noises.

It gets louder when turning left, and goes almost completely away when turning right. So I dunno.

Re: Wheel Bearing

If your getting alot of play in the wheels, I would suggest getting your Ball Joints replaced. Can you hear any sqeaking when you turn the car. That happen to me and I replaced the ball joints and the squeaking and wheel play went away. If you do replace your ball joints, make sure after to get an alignment!
-Good Luck

Re: Wheel Bearing

The other thing is if 4x4 you could be hearing cv axle on the left side. But just a thought.

AC Delco Shocks my man, and if you are smart, unlike yours truly, just replace stock with stock or monroe or something. My shocks are so stiff I think they cause everything in my truck to come loose!
