Bearing vs CVJ noise?? ('96)
I have recently developed a 'wining' nose in my front end -that occurs when the vehicle is in motion - the faster I drive, the louder it is. I had to replace my OEM front bearing hubs @ 50k because they started making a similar noise. Now at 100k - the noise is back again. Before I automatically replace a hub, I was wondering if there might be any possibility that the noise was coming from the CV joint assembly instead of a bearing hub.
What would be the symptoms of each failure? What is the MTBF for each component? (50k per bearing seems excessive to me). |

Re: Bearing vs CVJ noise?? ('96)
i had my wheel bearing replaced last month , the mechanic showed me how to diagnose the wheel bearing, jack up both front wheels off of the ground, car shut off,in neutral, spin the wheels by hand, the one with bad bearing will offer more resistance than the other. you can actually feel the difference

Spinman,
I noticed my 96 has also started a whining noise, but it seems it's only when I'm turning to the right, if I turn to the left I don't notice it. Is this something yours does also?? |

Re: Bearing vs CVJ noise?? ('96)
I replaced the LF last Fall. It made no noise but the wheel felt slightly sloppy on the hub and the old bearing was oozing grease.
Now the RF (I think) makes a quiet thumping sound mostly at around 35 mph. Without more noise or a "shake" when I grasp the tire its tough to know if that's what I need. Usually a CV joint will be aggravated and noisy when turning fully and accellerating slightly, in a parking lot for instance. Like a U joint they tend to stay quiet until pressure is applied; unless they're dangerously bad. The CV boot will tend to be leaking grease too if its gone. |
