checking code w/o scantool

Does anyone know a procedure for reading check engine codes without using a scan tool? On my bronco, if you connect a diagnostic port to the battery, the check engine light flashes codes. Is it possible to do the same on a 2000 Impala?

does the car at least run, if it does just take it to autozone or checker and they'll read the codes for free
