I test drove a 2004 Ford Escape with the 3.0L V6 a few weeks ago. I brought it home and sat in my driveway and revved it up to listen for noises. What happened kind of took me by surprise... when it revved up to 4000 rpm, it cut out! Like, it would go up to 4k rpms and then kick it back, not letting it go over 4k. Is there some kind of kick-back governor on these things that make it do that? Is that natural? I was telling a friend about it, and he called me just a few minutes ago and said that his dad's full size Ford pick-up did the same thing at about 4200 rpm's. So I am hoping someone will reply and tell me that this is normal. I sure do like this little Escape, and I want to know that this isn't a serious problem. I've never owned a Ford before, so I don't know about all their little surprises.
By the way, I ran a VIN check on this Escape, and it's record shows that it spent it's 68,000 mile life as a rental car. Any experience with buying rentals? If I go for this deal, and if it's not too pricy, I may opt for an extended warranty option if one is available.
