2000 Yukon 4x4 problem

My friend has a 2000 GMC yukon with push button auto-trac 4x4. Here latly he has been having problems with the buttons.

For example, after work we were sitting there talking and (of corse) he was in 2hi. All of a sudden, the yellow light went out. (no yellow lights on at all) The back light still worked (the light that lights up the words 2hi and such)

When you press the plastic besides it, the lights come back on. If you press it harder (and if you are in four wheel drive) it will engage in 2hi.

He payed $80 for a mechanic to hook it up to a matchine and tell him that there was a short in the 2hi swich.

Any suggestions? Should we just take it out and look at it for a short?

He just wants to go the the gmc dealor and get a new one. How simple is it to put on. We are no means mechanics, but we have both done minor work on cars before.
