91 Rotor change ( FUN! times)

I did INDEED read others posts(in the search here)! THANK YOU! VERY MUCH for the "heads ups"...regarding sledge hammers and presses!! as applies to bolt on rotors.I was "somewhat" prepared.
Canadian car with BOLT on rotors.
When the manual says to use a "HEAVY" slide hammer to pull the hub off. This of course applies to a BRAND NEW car.SOOOooo.."heavy" with a 14 y/o car ..IN the "salt belt" means..??? yes I do have a slide hammer.
First the hub nut.a 3/4" ratchet was USELESS on this puppy..I had to JUMP on that sucker to break it loose!
OH..the bolts that hold the rotor to the hub. They were cheese..I got a real good grip on the heads..with a REAL tight fitting socket..6 point of course.I even tapped them on.The heads rounded off like butter.WITHOUT the socket even pulling away from the hub.NOW I need new hubs too.Oh well.

Sure..pulling the hub/rotor.YA RIGHT.I doubt whether ANY slide hammer would have touched these babies.
I had to get 2 pieces of 1/4" x 2 1/2 angle iron about 8" long.Drill through these so that I could bolt them to the hub.THEN dril through them horizontally so that I could attach a LARGE eye bolt between them with a bolt.To this eye bolt I attached a piece of rod.NOW I could use just whatever I pleased..or needed as a "slide hammer"
HMmmm..ok..I have the rod(in place)..OH this might do. A TRUCK differential..(ring gear and case).I can just place the rod on supports..slide the truck differential onto the rod,nut on a stop.AND pull..back and forh..banging away. Now folks this is a REAL slide hammer!!

"Piece de resistance" yeilded..NOT without a bit of a fight.

There is NO WAY that very many people, garages, shops would be able to do this this way...OR have the tools.MASSIVE slide hammer. What do they do? Now I am curious..They must have to take off the lower ball joint, and pull the entire knuckle,knee/strut/axle shaft assembly out.YES! the thought did occur to me..break out the fork.I mean if you CAN'T get the hub off to access the rotor..you'ld have to yank the hub.rotor WITH the knuckle and the axle shaft.

Bolt on rotors..Canadian cars..CANADIAN cars..in the salt belt.

NOT!! very smart.

Oh well..not too bad..I kept my calm..BUT!! those other posts I had read sure WARNED ME! Thanks again guys..

Re: 91 Rotor change ( FUN! times)

So now that you are the Pro at this ... since mine is due how about a vacation in southern california? I guess you could call it working? I am convinced that if I can get my hands on a set I will upgrade to the 95-97 larger vented disc fronts and bigger wheel stud rears asap. Good to know you got the job done!
