Oil Pressure sending unit
OK, I just bought my daughter a 95 Talon, esi. This is going to be a project car for us.
At low rpms, the oil pressure light flickers. My hope is that it is the sending unit. I bought a Haynes manual, which says it has instructions for replacing this, but I can not find them anywhere. All I need to know is where the thing is. Anybody know where the sending unit it? I bought the new one and am ready to put it in. |

Re: Oil Pressure sending unit
take off you drivers side wheel, and remove the 3 10mm bolts holding the plastic shrouding inplace. you'll be staring right at it. looks like a large fuel pressure regulator with a wire coming out of the top.

I appreciate the help. I do have a question after seeing the guy's post that has a pic of the motor with the blue valve covers.
His motor appears to be oriented opposite the car we have. The tranny side is the drivers side, timing belt on the passenger side. The oil pressure sending unit is on the tranny side? |

The motor/tranny will be oriented the way you describe in all 2nd generation non-turbos. They decided to do things backwards on those cars for whatever reasons. I also dont know where the sender is on the non turbo cars. If you have the part in hand though, I would just slide under there and look for a part that looks the same. Odds are that will be it. Someone that has changed one on a NT car may chime in with some help...

OK everyone, I have taken off the black plastic wheel well liner, and slid all under that car. I do not see anything that looks like the sending unit. Anyone have a clue where this thing is?

Re: Oil Pressure sending unit
The sender is on the block on the very back of the engine. Go under the car, right in the middle of the block is the stock sender. Took me forever to find it. Its got wires coming from it and it goes straight into the block. Make sure the car is cold, and take it out. Actually very easy to do.
Again, its in the middle of the block in the very back, near the firewall. You have to be under the car to reach it, unless you take off the intake manifold. Ill post pics if you need them.

David,
Thanks, I found it while you were posting. From under the car, it looks like the pressure switch is "on top" of the oil filter, and the sending unit is towards the drivers side and up a little form there. Part of the problem is that the auto parts store sold me the wrong unit, so off to the store. The kicker now is that I popped the cap off the switch and the little bugger is giving me fits about going back on. |

The sending unit should be on the intake sit of the block, closest to the trany, mine done the same thing and it was not the sending unit it was actaully the oil pump. it was fried, and I burnt out some rod bearings by driving it like that. |

Yeah, I am half expecting ot have to replace the oil pump. What is the switch/electrical connection that is "on top" of the ouil filter housing. Looks like a pressure switch maybe. Could be an oil temp? I can NOT get that bugger to reconnect.
I have worked on NASCAR style racers, and my own trucks, but this thing is a little bugger. No room to work..lol. |

Yeah, it sits right up above the oil filter and the connector is kind of oval shaped. There is one bolt, dont remember the size, maybe 5 to 7mm towards the passenger side. That thing is a royal pain in the butt. I took the bolt out to see if I could take the peice off and snap the connection together in a place i could reach it easier, the bolt came out fine, but the peice just kind of rotated a little and would not pop out. I guess once I go back to the parts store and get the correct sending unit (they sold me a single post, male unit, that does not have the correct connection) I'll tackle that stupid thing.
I think I am also going to weld stock car style jacking points to the bottom of this car. This thing is a pain to put up on stands. The stands should go where the jack needs to go. So I am just going to add some stock car style jacking stubs so I can lift one side of the car at a time, and put the stands under it. |

I am having the same trouble with mine if you find out how to remove it can you please give me a hollar, and I will do the same for you, and by the way I was thinking of the same thing with the jack things, but I have not a clue on where to get them or what they are called. |

I dont think the jack points actually have a name or that you can buy them. On race cars, we just made them out of 1/2 or 3/4 in round tube. Obviously, they cant be thin walled tubing, have to be pretty stouts with good mounting points.
I can tell you this, if someone would make a better shop manual than the Haynes manual on this car, I would buy it. The Haynes manual sucks. I have had Chilton manuals in the past and they seemed way more detailed. There are so many parts in on and around the motor that are not identified by this Haynes manual. |
