More Speed
I have a question about my 04 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. It has to do with speed. How can I get more speed out of it, right now I can go 97 then the truck will lose just a little power and go to 93 before it will gain power. Once it hits 97 again it will repeat the same process. I know that it is supposed to operate like this. I was wondering if there was any way that I could bypass this feature.

Re: More Speed
On these trucks there is a fuel shut off at 97. Just like mine... If you wish to raise the top speed you can buy a speed control module or a Hypertech Power Programmer. With the Hypertech I believe you can move it to 128. You can do other things with the Hypertech like change shift points and adjust for different sized tires. At about $350 I dont know if that would justify for you.

Re: More Speed
No offense to you guys or anything, but doesn't it seem like your trucks might not be the safest vehicles to be doing 120+ mph in, not only for you, but for other people on the road as well? I mean, there may be a reason that GM engineered there to be a fuel cutoff at 97, just as many german companies engineer their sportscars with a speed limiter of 155; the car was simply not designed to safely go faster than that as it came equipped from the factory. Of course, with lowered and hardened suspension, Z rated tires, and performance brakes, it would become more sensible to reach those kinds of speeds in a truck, although the aerodynamic shape would certainly still not lend itself to high speed stability...

Re: More Speed
I kinda agree with him to a certain extent. I've been well over 115 in my truck and it scared the piss outta me...of course mine is higher than a 2wd..... it was very squirrley. I need a 2wd,....grrrr

Re: More Speed
yeah in a newer truck it is perfectly safe as long as you arent hauling a u-haul behind ya lol. my 73 chevy c-10 cheyenne has a tired old 350 in it and its carbureted so theres no speed limiter and ive even had that at 115 before and it doesnt even shudder or anything. smooth as a babys bottom, and thats a rusted out pile of crap too, so a good condition one is perfectly fine most likely.
i bet the reason for the 97 mph fuel cut-off is for handling purposes. trucks cant swerve to miss a squirrel at 130 miles an hour, you'd likely do about 50 kazillion flips and end up kicking the bucket. also, i have a friend who went 140 on the interstate once in his 86 silverado with a 450 horse 454 and he said the back end started to loose traction from the wind picking the lightweight bed off the ground a little bit. definately unsafe... by the way, lets say you have a regular cab short bed with a stock 8.1 liter v8 from 2002 or something. if there wasnt a speed limiter, how fast could that go on a flat straightaway? does anyone know? |

Re: More Speed
a high top speed is dangerous in any vehicle. 0-60 and 0-100 times are what I want to make gains in
