Re: Howling Noise
Two things could be wrong. First the tire could be worn and causing the noise you hear, this would be the cheapest and easist thing to repair as you simply replace the tire. The other would be the a bad wheel bearing that would cost a lot more to replace as you will probably have to take it to a mechanic or dealer. I would try the tire first and then only after you have replaced it if the noise continues, I would have the wheel bearing looked at. My money is on the tire!

Re: Howling Noise
Normally I would blame a wheel bearing, but in this case, I wonder if something was damaged or is interfering with the rotation of the tire.
The easiest thing to do is to rotate the tires back to where they were and see if the noise changes. If not...its wheel bearings or brakes. |

Re: Howling Noise
Unfortunately I think I would look at the wheel bearing first before the tires. The Azteks are well known for having wheel bearing problems and mileage means nothing. You'd want to get it in the air, somewhere you can trust the mechanic and have them check it. I had one on my 01 go bad and I know of many other posts over on the Aztek Fan Club about the wheel bearings.
The wheel bearing problem is not just Aztek specific but seems to be a GM problem. I had an Oldsmobile with the same problem. The wheel bearings are pricey since they have the ABS sensors in them. Jack |

Re: Howling Noise
Since it's still under warranty get into the dealer and have the bearing replaced.

Once I put on the luggage racks backwards and they caused a real howling noise that obviously increased with speed. Make sure the luggage racks are on correctly.

Re: Howling Noise
I have had both and you definitely can tell the difference. I would still think bearings.

Don't know if you ever got an answer to this but I have a 2001 and had that problem, turns out there was a bulletin on the rear-end. They had to replace it. If you haven't gotten it fixed yet, check with the dealer about the bulletin on the rear-end. They won't tell you about it because it is expensive. |
