1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont turn over or start

I drove my daughter to soccer this morning and in an hour the jeep wouldnt start or turn over although the stereo would come on. I thought it was the battery (the headlights wouldnt come on either until I got a jump.) But after I got the new battery the positive trued to spark and the headlights began flashing. I was wondering if it may have something to do with the alarm, I was broke until about a month ago and I'm now wondering if they messed up alarm then or if I did by disconnecting the battery and how to go about fixing that before I go onto thinking its a bigger problem?

try to open the trunk with your key or try to open the driver's door with your key, this should turn off the alarm
