MAFT Questions
Next week my friend(90 Laser AWD) its going to get a GM maft set up. He was looking to get it so he can vent with out problems. But I was looking at it online and it says its a tuning device! I did not know that. So is it kinda like a Safc? Also he is getting a FMIC this summer and does not have hard pipes. Can we cut the stock piping and just put it in?

Re: MAFT Questions
1) yes maft does let u vent
2) no u cannot just cut and put in stock rubber hoses for fmic. U cant clamp rubber to rubber because thats just retarded unless u have some metal pipeing in between. You can use stock rubber piping combined with hard pipes. EDIT: yes its also a tuning device.

Tell you friend to just wait until he gets hard pipes to put the maft on. Is the maft 3"? The stock pipes are 2 1/4" so even if you want to fit the rubber stuff on you'll still need coupler reducers and probably other fabrication to make it work. Just spend the extra money and get the blow thru UICP or have some other hard pipe cut to fit it. The MAFT has 5 knobs that you can adjust the airflow, fuel trim, adjustments to compensate for injectors, etc. You can have settings for different driving conditions (i.e., idle, WOT, cruise). You shouldn't depend entirely on the MAFT setup since you can't fine tune with it. You'll need to get the SAFC or DSMlink. Using the maft setup will also help your turbo spool faster, but it helps most with a bigger turbo. I don't think it'll be much of a significant difference, if there is any, with small turbos such as the T25, 14b, etc.

Re: MAFT Questions
I dont think a AFC is really necessary with the latest versions of the MAFt. It now can be adjusted in 2% increments instead of 5%. AFC is still quicker and easier to adjust in most cases though. But the MAFt will get the job done. If you are worried about trying to get in between the 2% adjustments, you are probably overtuning the car.

Re: MAFT Questions
So would you say a MAFT and a pocket logger would suffice for tuning?

Re: MAFT Questions
Suffice? Yes. Will it be perfect? Nope. Same drawbacks as AFC and Logger. But we all know DSMlink isnt a viable option for everyone.
I would use the logger to verify that the maft provides the same airflow readings at idle and at WOT as the stock MAS. Spending a little time upfront to do that will save you a lot of aggravation later.

I'm completely lost about everything you guys are talking about. Can someone explain what the MAFT, SAFC, UICP, FMIC, Pocket Logger, and DSMLink are?

Re: MAFT Questions
Quote:
2. UICP - Upper Intercooler Pipe - This is a pipe connected on one side to the throttle body and the other side connects to the intercooler. This is also where the BOV is housed. 3. BOV - Blow Off Valve - This is a valve mounted to the UICP. It is used to vent excess intake charge when the TP (Throttle Plate) is closed. This prevents the pressurized intake charge from feeding back into the still spinning turbo. 4. FMIC - Front Mount Intercooler - This is an air to air intercooler mounted on the front of the vehicle (in front of the radiator). It is traditionally larger the the factory SMIC (Side Mount Intercooler) and is more efficient at cooling the intake charge. 5. Pocket Logger - This is the name of Palm powered software created by Digital Tuning, Inc. It is designed to interface with the ECU's OBD-II port and allows the user to view and log most of the parameters as seen by the ECU. This is used in conjunction with the SAFC. www.pocketlogger.com 6. DSMLink - This is a Windows based software that is used instead of the SAFC/Pocketlogger combination. It uses a custom EPROM and allows much more user control than the SAFC (I won't go into any more detail, as you can visit their website www.dsmlink.com) 7. EPROM - Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory - This is a chip on the ECU circuit board used by DSMLink to modify timing, airflow, IDC (Injector Duty Cycle), IPW (Injector Pulse Width), etc, etc. If you look at my signature below this post you will see the SAFC mounted in front of the heater/AC vents (it is blue). The palm mounted lower and to the right is what I use to run the PocketLogger software. Your lucky I'm in a good mood and didn't just tell you to search.

Re: MAFT Questions
I have the 3" MAF-T set up and I have an A/F gauge, however I do not have a pocket logger as of yet. What is the best way to go about tuning the MAF-t? It seems pretyt good where it is as of now, but any other tricks I should know?
Oh, and if you ABS, be ready for a pain in the ass when you install it.
