old guy working on a new car

I'm an old shade tree mechanic looking to track down a low compression problem. First question, on a 2.7L, is 55lbs low compression?
What supplies should I get to remove the head (i.e. head gasket, exhaust gaskets...)?
Not being familiar with fuel injection, what should I be cautious of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: old guy working on a new car

yes my friend, 55lb. is way too low for this engine. It should be around 125lb. +/-10 psi. If you're willing to tackle on this huge project, let me prepare you, from personal experience. You're gonna need an impact gun, vibration damper remover, and necessary sockets, ratchets and wrenches for the job. With fuel injection, you'll need to depressurize the fuel system b/c it's under a minimum of 50 psi. Look inside your power distribution center and remove the fuel pump relay. Start the engine up until it dies. Remove your gas cap to relieve fuel tank pressure, you have now depressurized your fuel system (don't forget to put the relay back in after you've depressurized the system). Now here comes the fun part, you'll need to remove the radiator and fan assembly, all the belts, and hoses, detach the exhaust manifold and remove both upper and lower intake manifold and you'll need to pull the front of the motor apart to take off the timing chain. My suggestion to you, get a book from Haynes or Chilton and read over the exact procedure. It can be a handful to someone who's never done it before. But if you're confident in yourself and want to save yourself at least $2,000 in repairs at a dealer, go for it. If you need my help in anyway, don't hesitate to ask.
