Question Performence Intake... All the same?

Ok you all know when you get a car and want to tune it up you first buy springs... intake or exhaust right?? well im looking around for an Intake and need your guys advice. Ok i seen some cold air intake on ebay for under $50 also there is the AEM cold air intake. The regular Aem cold air and the V2. So my question is... do they all pretty much perform the same? Cheap intake porform the same as the high end with the same gain as AEM? I remembering reading on turbo magazine that they said the AEM V2 gave it 3 or 5 more hp then the regular cold air AEM intake but it might just be paid adverstisement. So which one would you guys perfer for the $$$?

1. AEM cold air??
2. AEM V2??
or
3. $50 dollar Ebay cold air??

i was leaning towards the V2 but if its all the same then i can save $$$ So please throw in your .

I got a short ram intake off eBay for like $25, works good. Plus, I am just planning to go get some pipe from the Home Depot for like $5-10 and make it a CAI myself, saved me like $20 or $30. As for the AEM V2, I don't see how one filter and metal tube could be so much better than another...

1. AEM cold air??
2. AEM V2??

You'd want to spend that much money for 3-5hp?

well the shorter the intake the bigger lower RPM gain your gonna get(minimal) and the longer CAI you would get a bigger higher RPM gain.
short ram=lower RPMs
CAI=higher PRMs

there's very little difference between the $30 ebay one and the $200 aem one. the aem ones goes a little lower in the engine bay to get cooler air but it doesn't make that much of a difference. plus the $200 one is worse for when it's wet because you can get water splashed up in it. get the ebay one, mine works great.

Re: Performence Intake... All the same?

Yeah, they don't really give more hp (minimal), just more usable hp throughout the RPMs that is lost to the wheels. Basically.

Re: Performence Intake... All the same?

Hey you guys gave me some good inputs on the the Intakes. I will get the Ebay intake! damn those AEM Crooks! haha Btw...

like 91 Eclipse said...
short ram intake = Low RPM
cold air ram intake = High RPM

So shorter rpm shifting for a maximum speed climb?
or longer rpm shifting for max gear speed?

Re: Performence Intake... All the same?

I noticed a little bit of a speed climb with my ebay intake. Nothing major.

Re: Performence Intake... All the same?

a shorter intake will have a faster speed climb in lower RPMs and a longer intake will have a faster speed climb in higher RPMs. the difference us very minimal though.

One last question... Do you know which AEM bypass i should get with my CAI? 2.25", 2.5", 2.75", or 3"?? I dont want any water to get sucked up into my motor ya know. and where does it go?

You do realize that you'd have to drive into a DEEP puddle of water so that your intake filter is completely submersed in water while the car runs for a minute or so to hydrolock your motor? Don't waste money on the bypass valve. I know it seems like "better safe than sorry", but honestly, you would have to TRY to hydrolock your motor! I had a CAI that almost touched the ground in my old RS for over a year. No bypass valve. Drove it in the pouring rain and over pig puddles of water hundreds of times. No hydrolock! Save that money you'd use for the bypass valve for a nitrous kit

Re: Performence Intake... All the same?

My friend with his RS last week drove(forded) through a puddle and locked it.
