Engine Revs without touching Gas

Ok, so this afternoon my car was fine. I installed an amp. Afterwards, it took me a couple tries to get it started. Then while driving home I noticed my car starting to stall with the clutch in, then the engine began to rev without me touching the gas. I had the clutch in and the brake on and it would rev for a little and stop, rev a little and stop. Could I have short circuited something while installing the amp?

Btw its a 95 G/A SE 4 cyl 5 spd, if that all matters.

Please help.

Re: Engine Revs without touching Gas

Well, since all was good prior to putting in your amp, it seems likely that in your wiring it up, you made some booboo. I'd suggest diagram your wiring on paper, where you hooked your leads and to, what you hooked your power leads to.

From there, retrace any instructions you had to follow in wiring the amp up and see if ya crossed something up.

I would presume it somewhere in your power and ground leads.

Re: Engine Revs without touching Gas

Are your battery terminals and grounds re-connected properly?

It sounds actually like a misfiring, but I don't see how installing an amp could cause it, unless somehow it was putting a massive electrical drain on the ignition system causing too weak of spark causing misfiring / engine revving to prevent stalling, ect.

Yo, Ride, how ya doin???

Yeah, what I sort of thinking re the power hooks, maybe tapping into wrong circuit, or drawing too much off tapped circuit.

LoL hey Tam - I was actually just about to post in off-topic letting everyone know what was going on. I've been extremely busy lately (amazing things have been happening with the ladies...) BTW, we seem to have posted at the same exact time .

Re: Engine Revs without touching Gas

Okay, after driving it today, I noticed that it only did it for the first 5 minutes after startup. Then it stops. Could it be the fact that the amp is putting so much stress on the electrical system that it revs higher to keep up with the demand? If so, would a power capacitor solve the problem?

well, a power capacitor won't hurt anything. It may be that your alternator doesn't put out enough amperage to accomodate the extra drain of your sound sustem.

I dont have an answer to the question, but I have the same problem after I start up, it will rev between 1500-2000 rpms. And I dont have an amp or anything else added on my car.

Re: Engine Revs without touching Gas

Aside from being possibly alternator or battery related, I'm thinkin it could also be TPS related. If the TPS got moisture in it somehow when he had the hood opened, it could be malfunctioning, causing the jumping RPMs, however after driving it, it could be heating up the casing enough to vaporize the water and allow the unit to function properly again, but upon engine cooldown it could be re-condensating inside of the housing. - just a thought, but it still sounds like an overdraw on the alternator. If it's not the alternator or TPS, it could be many other things, but I'm not sure how they would be related to your amp installation. These would include (as some were mentioned) MAF, (except im not sure if yours has one) IAC motor, plugs, coil packs, EGR valve, and possibly IAT sensor.
