credit cards

hi guys
i went to the bank today to apply for a credit card and they turned me down cause i am 18 and have no prior credit, when i asked the bank lady how i was supposed to get credit if no one would give it to me she said " it's hard to start out", so what i'm asking is how i could show the people at the bank that i have credit, or ow i could get some, i've held down a job for 3 years now, a good paying job, i own my own car and pay for everything on it and i have considerable savings in the bank, how did some of you people first get credit?

thanks

You could start out with a "secured" credit card --- You prepay what you want to use, until you have some history. Or, you could take out a small loan for somthing to show you can pay. Or, find a credit card company that will issue a card with your present history. Remember, all VISA or MasterCards are not issued by the same bank.

All you need is a start...

Good Luck!

I started out with a credit card from a department store. It was really easy to get and once I had that for a while I applied for another one at a different store and did the same thing. It was then much easier to apply for a bank credit card as they could see that I had 2 credit cards from different stores with a good credit history. It takes time, but you’ll get there.

It's really easy.

GOTO COLLEGE.

When I was in school I coulda had about 15 different credit cards. The bloodsucker credit card recruiters were all over campus. They'd give us free pop, candy bars, shirts, coffe mugs..whatever they could do to get us to sign. I would sign up with fake info just to get the free stuff. Its pretty easy to get them as long as you have a student ID. Otherwise the best way is to get a department store card or Target card.

If you want to build a credit history, the best way to start is take out a bank loan. Even a one year personal loan (of at least a couple grand) at some ungodly interest rate. Then pay it off in a couple months (dont pay it off the same month you got it and dont spend the money and actually pay the interest rates for the life of the loan). Just the fact you had a loan that you paid off helps your overall credit rating more then just having no bad credit items on the reports these loan officers/credit card companies pull from TRW etc.

Go to www.studentcreditcard.com. They hooked me up two years back with no prior credit, and I wasn't even a college student. Now of course I have way more cards than I WANT, let alone NEED.

Ive done all my banking at the same bank and never had debits etc so they asked me if i'd like to have a credit card.
Have to be careful with them as they are such a easy way to get you into trouble.
Get a low limit to start and see how things go.

Credit cards are a neccesary evil(try hiring a rental car without one!),but you need to keep your limit low.The key question to ask is...'could I meet the payments if I lost my job next week?'

And never share a card with anybody.

When I was 16 my parents co-signed for me. It was my card with my name, but if I messed up it would reflect on them. But as I made payments it was building up MY credit history. After I turned 18 the bank sent me a letter saying since I did good, they would remove my parents from the account if they signed the enclosed form. So my parents signed me off and then I was on my own.

Also like mentioned above, go to college. As for getting a loan..that might be a tough one to pull since you have no credit history yet. Another thing to consider with loans...they judge you by your debt to credit ratio. Meaning if you make only $10,000 a year, you will not be able to get much of a loan.

Its not how much the loan is for. When a credit report is pulled, there is a credit rating on it. That number is driven by many factors, but the single biggest contriuter is not bad credit information, but bank loans that have been repaid. Having a good credit history on credit cards alone doesnt make you a good credit risk, but paying back bank loans will.

Of course if you dont pay back credit card or bank loans, it will lower your overall rating, but I cant stress enough that getting a bank loan for even a small amount (a couple grand) and paying it back will drive up your credit worthyness. All you need to do is take the loan, dont spend the money and pay the loan back in two - three months using that money. It'll cost a couple bucks in interest (pay a third each month to reduce the total interest paid) but that can make a world of difference if you go for a mortgage, new car or other types of bank loans that look at your overall rating when deciding on what interest rate they'll offer you.
