High mileage Honda just purchased

Hey folks. I just picked up a '93 Civic DX Coupe w/ AT. Only ding against it is that it has 232,000 miles on it.

This is the first Honda I've had (since my 1972 CB350G ).

What kind of problems are typical for this mileage on this model? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

gas mileage will depend on your maintenence. engine health will depend on your compression and leakdown.

Re: Re: High mileage Honda just purchased

The biggest issue is the timing belt. If you don't know the last time it was replaced it wouldn't be a bad idea to change it.

Timing belt
Water pump
Drive belts
Seals*

Plugs, cap/rotor, wires*, fluids are all important too.

Other than that, rust is the biggest problem. Coil springs tend to break easily on mid 90's Honda's, check those.

As long as it's taken care it should last a lot longer. I've seen over 400K on a civic & over 600K on an Accord, both with orginal engines and transmissions.

CVJ boots might be bad. Replaced one at ~180k and the other @ ~185K ($25 each). Front disc brakes might be bad. (~$30 each) As long as the oil is at about the same level between oil changes, you are good to go. Check timing and valve clearance (free, if you do it yourself). Got 220k on mine with all original equipment, except for shocks/struts/springs, filter's, fluid etc.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like no real problematic issues with these vehicles then other than normal maintenance.

The CV boots are in excellent shape. Good elasticity with no cracking in the boot.

cheers!

Re: High mileage Honda just purchased

Ya, alot of stuff may be needed at the begining, but soon, you will be back to regular maintenance.

Also, if your car wont start one day.....find out what the main relay is, and replace it. The main relay is by the driver side kick panel, and controls most of the fuel system, such as the fuel pump. I am just saying this, because it is very common problem in older Hondas.

But remember....you have a Honda!!!

Of course it still starts. There are honda's out there with 300k, 400k even 500k miles on them. I am just breaking it in.
