front diff and transfer case question

would anyone be able to offer me any advice on how to change/check the front transfer case and or differential fluid? im still trying to pinpoint this vibration problem, after 3 plus months of dealers and garages milking me out of money. anyone be able to tell me how to check and or change the front diff or tranfer case fluid? pics would be awesome too. thanks!

How about we diagnose the problem before fixing something that might not be related.

Any information on when his problem happens would be great.

Did you balance the tires?

Did you clean the inner portion of the rim to make sure all dirt which could be causing the imbalance is removed?

I take it you had an alignment?

Did you put new tires on when this occurred?

Changing the fluids is part of standard maintenance and should be done on a 5 year old vehicle even if it isn't the cause of any problem.


To do the front diff you need a hand pump to extract the old fluid, because it doesn't have a drain plug. You can get the pump at a parts store for about $10. Remove the fill plug, insert the hose and pump out the old fluid. Refill until the level is even with the bottom of the hole. Check after a short drive to make sure it is still at the proper level.

The transfer case has a drain plug. Remove the fill plug first to see if the transfer case is overfilled. If it is over filled that would mean that the seal is bad between the transmission and transfer case. Then remove the drain plug. Allow it to drain completely then add a little fresh fluid (with the plug still out to make sure all the old comes out). Install the drain plug then fill to the bottom of the fill hole.

If I remember right...the diff takes 80w90 and the transfer case takes Dex III ATF. Check your owners manual to be sure.

I know that, but he has a vibration problem we should help him fix.

He is changing the fluid thinking it is the solution.

Let's fix his problem fix, then move onto maintanence.

well as for the vibration problem i believe i have that pretty much narrowed down to an engine mount. i have exhausted all other possibilities and now i really just want to take care of changing the fluids as a maintenance measure, sorry for the confusion. thanks for the help though, any more would be much appreciated!
