Question 289 swap for 390?

Hey,
Just wondering what it takes to swap the 289 out of my '67 Mustang Coupe, and replace it with a 390. Any ideas on shock towers, trannys, rear-ends, and costs would be greatly appreciated. I just would like to know before I consider this option.

Re: 289 swap for 390?

The shock towers are fine, no changes needed since many came with 390's. I'd use a C6 transmission amd I would move up to a 9 inch rear end, but you may be ok. It all depends on how much power you're getting out of the 390. Price could range greatly depending on where you get the parts and how much of the work you do youself so I cant say on that.

Thanks Tony,
I am hearing conflicting stories on the shock towers, but you are right, many of them came with 390's originally.
In talking to other people, they are recommending tweaking the original 289 to get the "best bang for my buck". Apparently the 289 has a lot of hidden potential?

Re: 289 swap for 390?

'68 was the year for the wider shock towers, hence the debut of the 428 CJ. However, the '67 GT-500 had a 428 Police interceptor, with a few sneaking out hiding 427 Side Oilers, so it will fit.

The 390 was more of a low-end passenger car motor, IMHO. I'd personally go with a good large-ci 351W-based stroker. That's just me.

Re: 289 swap for 390?

I have never been a fan of the 289/302. Plenty of people swear by them. IMO they are average motors, not likely to let you down but nothing special either. SVTcobra306 makes a good suggestion.

Re: 289 swap for 390?

I agree that a 351 would be a good alternative, but I am trying to limit it to engines that were original options on my '67 coupe. To the best of my knowledge that leaves me with the 200, 289, and 390. I guess there was the Cobra 289, which would be a good start, but probably not easy to locate?

Re: 289 swap for 390?

No doubt the 427 and 428 are dream engines, but how tough (and and what cost) would it be to find one for my '67 coupe?

Re: 289 swap for 390?

I haven't seen any 427 or 428's for sale lately, haven't been looking. But if they are anything in price like a 429, all I can say is good luck.

Re: 289 swap for 390?

The 390 was rated at 320 hp and bookoos of torque.Eddelbrock Rpm aluminun heads for that come in 2.09 or 2.19 intake valves, also 750 carb ,cam and a 428 crank will also stroke it to a 406 thats a 3.98 stroke over the 390's 3.78. Scat also makes cranks for these bad boys.Jegs is a good place to find perfomance parts for this engine
