|
turbocharged celica
i got a turbocharger for my celica, but havent installed it yet, im afraid the stock parts in my car cant handle the compression. what do i need to replace? i know i need a new clutch, cams, and valves, but what else, i know im missing some things......thanks

close but not so,
you need a exhaust manifold thats gonan go into the turbocharger, the intake part is much simpler, unless you run a carburettor (someone else can fill in about manifolds and intakes) you need to look at your compression, luckily most toyotas are low compression for 4 cylinders, like 8:1-8.5:1 however celicas being a sports model might have a higher CR. it needs to be lowered, 8:1 is great. youl need suitable internals for the boost you want to run, higher boost (prolly over 7psi) will need forged pistons etc, porting and polishing is good but not nececarry. ive notmuch experience on this but for higher boosts on alloy blocks tc you should look at sleeving etc. The work you said will all go towards a more pleasing experience with a turbo'ed car. like i mentioned earlier, internals (pistons, conrods, crank maybe even ) are really important to prevent you doing damage like throwing a rod. other than that i cant remember, proper tuning of the ecu is important, and looking at the fuel system is a must, suitable flow electric pump and injectors so the car doesnt starve itself. well if your gonna run low boost, being under 7 PSI i wouldnt worry about the compression that much. MY car has a stock 9.5:1 compression and im running 7 PSI with no problems. The most important thing is tunning. I cant stress that enough with FI. TUne TUNE TUNE TUNE! You can have the best built engine in the world, but if it isnt tuned right it will blow in a second. Get your self a nice Emanage system, and have to dyno tuned.

As long as your rings and ringlands are strong enough, you should be alright. But if you do decide to go with forged pistons, I honestly would recommend about 9:1. A lot depends on your turbo size too. If your going with a small turbo like a T-28, then you could go with 8.5:1 or so since its a very quick spooling turbo. If your going to go with a T3/T4, i would certainly stay around 9:1 - 9.5:1 to help you with your low end power since that size turbo on a little 4 cylinder wont make full boost until about 4,500 rpm's or so. The crank is fine. It will take more than you can throw at it. Upgraded bearings are always highly recommended. Other things that are needed are turbo manifolds, wastegate, blow off valve, downpipe, intake piping, plenty of silicone hoses, intercooler is highly recommended but not neccessary, and of course a tune preferably dyno tuned.

I very highly recommend getting a pre-fabbed kit for a 7th gen celica. These cars are kinda tricky to get right.
