xa maybe wip maybe shi....ooops

lol

I've been tied up for a while so I haven't been around. My computer is on the fritz, my scanner is broke, and my hot tub isn't working...It's like the ghetto all over again lol.

Anyway when all else fails (or works for that matter) draw.

I've been teaching my son how to draw cars (he's 10) and today I was teaching him about Flair markers. I know it's grade school, but I love'em. So I started a sketch of this XA I've had my heart on for a few weeks. Don't get me wrong it'll never replace my VW (just put in new carpet 2 days ago)

But I really like this car:

so...

ref:

and here's my quick sketch:

This post may never get past this stage but I wanted to spend a minute talking about sketches and inking so here goes.

blah blah blah blah blah blah ink.

lol

actually in brief let's just say that the ink intimidates and forces you to be "permanent" in where you go...aha!!!...actually it doesn't. The ink is as free as the pencil. What was permanent one second becomes a faded memory the next. You live between the lines. Much like the Calligraphy masters the mental exercises you go through while sketching develops your eye and arm for future renderings. If you look close you can see where I was happy my presentation is done as well as where I was angry about my scanner which forced me to use a photo for this post....grrrrrrrr.

WOW, that's deep man.

I don't have a scanner either so I guess I know your frustration. I have to photograph all my drawings. Funny that you mention teaching your son to draw, I've been doing the same with my son. He's 10 and he loves drawing but he's asked me to help him draw better cars. It's a tough process when you're the teacher.

I love it!
Loose ones like this can really reflect stuff like emotional expression.
I remember reading the liner notes to a miles davis album where
he was quoted as saying "When you hit a wrong note it's the next
note that makes it good or bad". This is a cool way to look at making
marks. The is no wrong mark only bad recoveries. I think it is
really true in japanese calligraphy. No erasing Very similar to
what you are talking about.

decided to go ahead and draw it since my system is still down.

I'll transfer it once again to regular bond and fix the grill and define some other shapes then transfer my pen paper and then I'll ink with microns.

Nice drawing Lemorris. Do you make up those chrome reflections out of your head?

I'll try to explain where those shapes come from.

I'm big into "feel" over form. What would happen in the real world doesn't bind me artistically....I try to work within the "real" but allow as much expression as the piece feels like it needs.

crap....

That didn't help at all....hmmmm

ok

In the reference I can see a real dark area in the front rim that looks like its coming from the opening between the star leg (spoke...whatever). I don't see one on the back wheel because of perspective, depth, and stuff like that. I know I'm gonna ink this and that huge black area isn't something I'm really feelin so when I go to drop in those shapes I kinda modified it. I saw that I was likin the swirly lookin areas so I compromised in that big black section and just swiveled in a funky shape. I swirlied in my own funky swirlies and moved on.

If I swivel funky shapes in similar areas on both wheels...all of a sudden I have consistency and some funky shape reflections that become believeable.

The same goes for the treatment of the car in general. I know the point where the windows meet the rear doesn't have a very pronounced hump on it, but while I was drawing this I was remembering how much I like that little knob for the big toe in old Disney Goofy drawings. The little hump though un-real adds flair and attitude. That pronounced piece and similar treatments throughout the car take it to a very funky toony place yet maintain it's believability because it is consistent throughout the piece.

make sense?

Thinking through a piece is a great skill to develop.

Thanks for the look into how you make rims.
I'm going to give that a try on my next toon.
