93 camry starter going bad

Hi,
My camry has given me some issues when starting it in the past but this morning i had to turn the key like 5 times before the car started. I could hear the beep and the lights and stuff so i know its not the battery. Now my question is, since its not doing it all the time and when it started i would turn the key 2 times and it would start on the 2nd turn, is there any way to predict how long before it will just stop working? I should also add that the 3 or 4 times it did it before, it was in the morning, the first start of the day and it never did it once after it was started.

Re: 93 camry starter going bad

It could still be the battery, as you need ALOT of power to turn the starter. But likely it is the starter. It could be a bad connection in your starter switch also. Is your battery 5 years old? Maybe have your battery charged and see if that helps. A weak battery is not good for the starter, you should have a good battery first.

If this happens again, have someone hold the key in the on position while a second person wacks the starter with a hammer or a wrench. Don't try to break the starter, but do tap it with a bit of force. If the starter now turns, the starter is the problem. In particular, the starter has bad contacts inside of it. This is a fairly easy and cheap DIY fix if you are willing to take the starter off and take it apart. Do a search on this forum for "starter contacts". There is a procedure somewhere on this forum for this repair.

Easy Fix

!st off - high probability you don't need a starter, but rather a starter
kit, hey!
The kit is actually a set of contact points ( not every Toy. dealer stocks 'em because the kit is $14.00 & a starter goes for Around $200. Get the picture?) You remove the starter, R&R the contacts, re-install,
$ go out for a nice date with the $$$ you saved!
Cruise the Toyota online parts guys for the part no., & also for the
R&R process. Not rocket science. Even I could do it.

You can just bend the L-shaped contact upwards, make sure the contacts are good when the plunger goes down to the bottom. I did that about 4 years ago and that worked fine on my 88 Camry.
