Fuel tank Installation "HELP"

after my fuel pump failed a week ago on my 89, i bought a new tank, and sending unit etc, now when going to replace tank i cannot getting the straps to where they should be. The tank is fully extended up into its place with no more room. If i try and get it higher, the tank starts to collapse in the bottom, i dont want to puncture it or damage my sending unit/pump. i have purchased and verified that i have the correct tank and straps. The bolts are replacements and are the same length as the origionals. should i go with longer bolts? Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Fuel tank Installation "HELP"

I haven't put a tank in an 89, but I did have the tank out of my 97. It too was difficult to "seat" back in the right spot. I had to angle it in and wobble it back and forth (front to back). In addition, there was some wiring above, towards the back that I had it snagged on for awhile. I had to push the wiring back for clearance. I even dropped it down twice, before I got it right. I would keep trying to manuver it into place. There just isn't much room under there. It needs to go exactly into the right spot.
