Anybody else hate power steering?

My sister bought a 94 Eagle Talon, and I was driving it the other day. I was doing somewhere along 65-70 mph with it, and I was coming up on this car, and there was room to pass, so I went for it. Well, I move the steering wheel a little bit (at this point I'm used to the manual steering of my Honda CRX), and almost nothing happens. Then almost like a second later the car goes in the oncoming lane, almost as if it was a delayed reaction. Was that caused by power steering? I haven't really noticed that in any other car, at least not to this extent. If that's caused by power steering, then I'm going to take it out of every car I own in the future. Other than parking lots, what are the bad things about manual steering?

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

Okay, well lemme lay down for you why I like power steering; we currently own a 1972 volvo p1800, which is a tiny little sports car with an auto tranny, and a small 4 cyl engine. Everytime I have to drive the damn thing it's the biggest pain in the ass ever, in fact, sometimes it's soo damn hard to turn the POS that I need my passenger to help me steer the car. It's terrible trying to fit it in the garage, and what if I need to make a quick manuever ? Than I'm F***ed b/c I can't turn the damn car as fast, I dunno bout you but I like my power steering just the way it is.

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

Manual steering is not really a problem on a 2000 pound car I guess. It's a little hard in a parking lot, but I can still manage.

whatever that delayed reaction was I can assure you it was not powersteering. it sounds more like really bad tie rod ends. that will get you killed fast! I've owned a few of those 94 Talon/Eclipse/Laser. they had great steering.
oh and manual steering SUCKS! j/k ...... no but really I have a leak in the Starion and it losses powersteering, sucks big time!

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

I hate ABS, power steering is great in parking lots, at high speeds who needs it but when the wheels aren't realy turning fast it help out a lot.

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

Torque steer > manual steering. If i had manual steering in the skittle i would probably be dead by now.

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

As long as my power steering is heavy, I'm happy.
My ex-gf's Comet had PS I think, but no power brakes ... now THAT was freaky!

I had a friend who was in a drive-thru once when the PS on her Astro van went kaput, she couldn't make the tight 90-degree turn to get to the window

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

1. I hate power steering which is why I removed it from Hyde.

2. I agree that htere may be something dangersouly wrong with your sister's car.

3. There is a good chance that if her car has P/S that it is not on at those speeds. A lot of modern cars only use P/S at lower speeds.

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

i hate manual steering, my dad had a 78 ford F-100, and everything on that truck was manual, manual brakes, manual steering, no radio, but that manual steering was a bitch, my arms were sore everytime i drove it, its like working out, i broke a sweat driving that

Re: Anybody else hate power steering?

Yeah I get that feeling whenever I drive any car other than my CRX - it's mostly because the steering response on my CRX is excellent. Whenever I drive someone elses car I ask them what's wrong with their steering and they say "nothings wrong with my steering that's just the way it always feels..."

I don't think it has anything to do with power or manual steering - Honda is well known for excellent handling and steering response.

Also - wider, lower profile tires make your car more responsive.
