93 Voyager wont shift

This has now happend 2 times. I start it and take off and i notice when im around 40-50 that it is not shifting. The first time i was close to home so i went the way going slow enough to keep the rpm's down. Got home changed fluid and filter which was very dirty. Then 2 months later which was 2 days ago it done it again this time I was half hour from home so i pulled over killed it and restarted it. Sure enough just as i thought it shifted fine all the way home and past 2 days. What is causing this? One other issue i notice is comeing to a red light so im braking get almost stoped and the light changed so i let off and give gas and it hits hard kinda the feeling on a rear wheel drive when the u joint is out. Any help on these 2 issues?

When you change the oil at home you only drain less then half of the oil from the transmission, so basically you only refresh the oil. I would change the oil and filter again and see how the tranny works. Remember to use only ATF+3 oil in the transmission.

Assuming for the moment that the two issues are not related it is possible you have an electrical issue causing the transmission to malfunction. I've seen very similar issues resolved with sensor changes, even an ECM change. The clunk could be a CV joint? or just over sensitivity due to other issue perhaps?

If they are related it could be a transmission problem, but I'd rule out all the less expensive electrical stuff first as best I could.

The last time I had transmission problems (93 Caravan), when I did a full stop and started up again, I had to press the gas, the engine would rev up but not move, then let go of the gas and press again. Then the tranny would kick in and off we went. After a week of this, it completely died out. If I shut down the engine for a while (at least two minutes), I was able to go again.

In any case, the mechanics told me that the transmission fluid cooling loop in the rad was completely plug. He said the oil was probably getting too hot. Worth a check...

Unfortunately, I also needed a new transmission. Knowing what I know now, I probably would of invested a bit of time to check the sensors/solenoid and changed the oil myself.

Well the part where it wont shift im just guessing it has to be electical related and is shorting out. Reason i think this is iv shifted through the gears and it didnt change anything but as soon as i killed it and restarted it, it worked fine and has so since. So is there a sensor that tells the trans when to shift if so that would be my guess thats what is shorting out?


Now as for the giving gas and getting the little buck iv went through alot of post of similar problems and iv got it down to 2 things. Cv joints or motor/trans mounts, im just not sure which or how to tell which could be the one bad.

Input & Output speed sensors can affect shifting, as well as a host of other things. PRNDL switch, ECM, bad connection, you name it - dang electronics!
