2k+ Heavy Duty Tranny Questions

After going for a drive this past evening in my 2000 Impala (9C1 for the few who regular this board that don't know) and i've been having light transmission slipage for awhile now, tonight it really made it obvious its dieing the horrible death with not catching at all when I went to try to pass someone at highway speed (by way of flooring it obviously) I knew it was invevitable from the grey color to the tranny fluid and metal shavings showing up.

Anyways, i'm driving the car until it fully gives out. But I wondered how many Impala owners in here... 1.) Have the HD version transmission. 2.) Have had to replace their transmission.

I've seen some people speak of estimates for reman. Tranny's and new ones, both numbers seem fairly steep ($1700+?) I've also seen that 3800performance.com has their Thrasher model transmission for $1999 + whatever fun options you want. Anyone have some experience with those in here yet? Or shall I lurk the Grand Prix boards on those as I imagine more of them have it.

Any advice will be appreciated. The tranny has served 143k miles under police use and is at 160k now if anyone wanted to know

Re: 2k+ Heavy Duty Tranny Questions

well the only cars with the heavy dutys are the police package and the ss. I dont think adding that ooptino is possible on a base or LS. I could be wrong, but you might have some luck in the other 3800 motor cars the tranny in your car is the "4T65E HD" for heavy duty take off the HD and thats everyone else. so its the same tranny just different alloys and metals that make up certain parts in the tranny to make it last longer.

Yes I know, and as was stated, my car is the 9C1 police package. I know theres a handful of 9C1'ers and probably some SS owners abundant in here.

Not sure if I mentioned, but going into 3rd and over-drive is where the tranny is having the most troubles right now, I don't notice any slipping with 1st and 2nd gear. Aside from that the car will not shift into 3rd until almost 70mph.

As said any help would be helpful

bigrod 4T65E HD doesnt fit the 3.4 sounded like you were saying it did. I tried to get one for my base model.

Yeah its only for the 3.8's... Generally speaking its commonly found on the Supercharged 3.8's found in Pontiac GTP's and Bonneville SSEi's

Impala Police Package is one of the few N/A 3.8 applications if not the only one with the HD tranny.

On another note, I got some quotes today from shops on the transmission. I was surprised.

Local Shop - Quoted $2500-$3000 for a rebuilt Tranny.

Local Dealer - Quoted $2569.02 after tax even for a NEW Tranny.

I found that to be surprising with past experiances with shops vs dealers.

It seems that you've spent a lot of pennies in trying to make your base a police model, what all have you done so far And why not just buy a ex-cruiser to begin with?

Re: 2k+ Heavy Duty Tranny Questions

On the impala cruisers, i noticed the other day on one of ours, i opened the hood when i was trying to fix the temperature gauge problem by disconnecting the batter (different post) I looked down and right in front of the radiator, there was a small radiator type thing that looked out of place. It had lines going down underneath to what i think was the transmission. Am i correct???

Re: Re: 2k+ Heavy Duty Tranny Questions

yeah bremis taht is porbably the tranny cooler, thay also might have a oil coolier and a power steering cooler, they have all the cool shit on the poilce packages. and to MCO I havent really made my impala into a police package one, I only have the rims, center caps, push bumper and took off the spoiler and put in my warning lights for fire fighting. the rims were for winter, the caps since I had the rims and wanted the look , the bumper is same as the look , but also I use it for fire fighting and first responder pushing disabled vehicles to safety. but I also have alternative rims and take the bumper off and put the spolier on to look like a normal car when I want to. but when I bought the car I wasnt part of the fire depertment, I just really liked the car. I just drive it hard sometimes and want the different fluid coolers and heavier tranny and was going to become a police officer, but around here they dont make that much money. plus knowing as many police officers as I do its just something im kinda caught up in.

Re: 2k+ Heavy Duty Tranny Questions

MCO i havent really spent that much money trying to make it look like a 9c1 the caps, tint, antennas were like $250. I also have CB and scanner inside. I like the look of the 9c1 i think its pretty badass, and the reason i try to buy parts that the police package has is because they are built to perform better under more rigorous condictions. For example the HD tranny, only reason i was looking into it was cause i had two tranny problems already and was lookin to get a beefier one. Also the car was given to me about 4-5 years ago after a family member passed away, unfortunately. I would liked to have owned a 9c1 or P71 but only if they were going to be brand new, which is pretty hard to come buy around here. Cops round my way beat the living shit out of their cars and i don't want to be the one paying big bucks because of it. But all in all $250 isn't bad for the 10% tint($170), center caps ($40-$50), and antennas and CB ($40).

It was just a question, I have 3 antenna stubs, I havn't a clue where i'd find some that were on there, let alone a CB or Scanner... I would enjoy having all of that. Sounds like you had a good deal on that tint, most places charge $200+ around here.

FYI, More often than not, 9C1 Impala's are used for 'general' driving around. From what i've seen, not nearly as many out there actually doing all the traffic stops and whatnot. (Though mine was...)

The 3-5 grand range they seem to run seems like a steal to me even if you have to put some money into it. Seeing how New 9C1's run 15-20 Thousand. Not that it matters, but i've been keeping tabs on how much its been costing me total for this car. I expect it to equal what I paid for the car shortly, but the car will be in *excellent* condition once everything is done. Certinly good for another 100k Miles.

And whoever mentioned the mini-radiator, That is the tranny cooler, standard on all 9C1's

I have a 2001 9c1 Impala that I bought new from the dealer. At 42,000 miles my transmission started making noise from 2nd to 3rd gear and into overdrive. The dealer found a broken input carrier assy and 4th hub stripped out.
