87 Crown Vic Jacking Points

Hi everyone,
I have a 87 Crown Vic,and i'm having to change out the gas tank due to it developing a large rust hole,so I have to get the back end of the car raised up.My question is it ok to use the rear differential housing as a jacking point to raise the rear end of the car?I've saw many vehicles jacked this way,but the chilton repair manual I have for this car says to never use the differential housing as a jacking point,if this is true then how should I jack up the rear of the vehicle so I can get 2 jackstands under the axle tubes?

the reason your manual states to not use this as a jacking point, is that it is not safe. plus you could also risk damaging you diff cover.

i too have used this as a jacking point... but i cannot condone it.

Re: 87 Crown Vic Jacking Points

Probably the safest way is with 2 floor jacks on either side of the frame just in front of the rear wheel kickup. Or back the car onto 2 oil change ramps. Easy on the gas though, as using driven wheels on ramps can pull one thru if your garage has a slick floor! I too have used the diff - just be careful not to catch the cover with the lips of the cup on your floor jack. And chock the front wheels securely before jacking if using the jack method and after jacking if using ramps.
