did that maverick come with the shock tower brace bars going to the fire wall or did only straight 6's come with them?
my maverick came with them but i have seen a few without them or do people just take them off? or did they put a crossmember going under neath the oil pan on 302 mavericks and scrap the upper braces? sorry for the questions i put a 351 windsor in my maverick and am finding a lot of little different things on mine compared to other cars |

Re: any suggestions for my maverick/
Get rid of that dinky air cleaner. Its costing you big power.
Use the biggest filer housing you can find. A K&N filter helps too. You can always make a few extra HP with a cold air induction system. If you cannot find one to fit its fairly easy to make your own. Also those glass see-through gas filters are a big fire hazard (if thats what you have. A broken or thrown belt could easily brak it and flambee your car quickly. Also......is that a stock fan there?? Yikes. Its useless without a shroud anyways. The stock solid -mount fans suck power big time. Add a fan clutch and a shroud or better yet, go all-electric. |

putting a big block ford in a maverick? especially a 429\460 would mean a whole custom made front end in a maverick
i had to cut the shock towers and grind the exaust manifolds to make my 351 windsor fit (should have used a 302 and wouldn't have had to do any of it) i have a 429 sitting around and we tried to see what it would take to get it to fit but new suspension ,steering ,and rad support put us off of it show us pics of this big block maverick |

Re: any suggestions for my maverick/
Looks like a sweet ride (and I own 4 Chevys)! Other posters were right-on with their comments about air and fuel accessories.
Doubt you need a big block. The weight would mess up your handling on the street. Also, there is not much performance development on big blocks any more as they are now pretty much truck engines (same situation with Chevies). But small block (5.0) research and improvements keep coming from Ford and the aftermarket. Any parts or crate engines the Mustang boys can use should bolt in. But if you really want to fly, how 'bout a 500hp blown Ford GT motor? With the electronic controls it's smog legal. Just have to wait for the first fool to total his GT so it can be parted out! |

WITH THAT SAID. i would install a pertronix igniton and coil, as stated earlier, fuel filter and an electric fan if you can afford it. do that along with the radiator.

Re: any suggestions for my maverick/
Who has the idea big block developement hasn't kept pace with small block needs to go to the race track once in a while. Big block engines, both Ford and Chevy, are at a point of power production never seen before. A 460 with the right "goodies" is completely out of reach for anything in the modern "small" motors. How about a 545? I know a man with a '75 Lincoln Towne Car (ick) with one of those monsters in it (the only Ford he could find cheap). It's not much to look at, nor is it worth much from a standing start. From 40 MPH, it will EAT UP a new 'vette or Mustang.
There's a Maverick right here in Crewe (a VERY small town) that has a BBF in it. It's "back halved" and caged. 9 seconds and "streetable" (a relative term, to be sure). FWIW |

Re: any suggestions for my maverick/
Dear MrPbody,
Thanks for all your authoritative comments on muscle cars of all types. I stated that big-block performance development has lagged because they aren't being raced in many places or series any more. NASCAR went small block decades ago. Top fuel and funny cars use big blocks, but these are low-production aftermarket aluminum interpretations of hemi architecture with wet sleeves, not suitable for street operation. You will find big blocks in some Stock and Gasser classes but these are mostly amateur entrants. The fact that you give a '75 Lincoln Town Car as an example of big block street performace is telling; the car is 30 years old! No efi, no multiple valves, few if any computer controls. It may run well but is far from cutting edge. With the factory speed equipment now available, is a 5.0 liter that far behind? Q.E.D. |
