gas gauge problems

I have a 1995 Jetta 3.Sometime last year the gas gauge started to act up.If I fill the tank the gauge works normally until I hit a half tank and then the gauge goes sort of haywire. It drops down to empty and then slowly climbs up a notch or two and then back to 1/2 tank and does this repeatedly until I fill-up again.Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Re: gas gauge problems

It's inside the fuel tank. There is an access cover in the front left of the luggage compartment area.
