Challenge: Sliding Door Locks, But Won't Unlock

Hi,

I have a 2000 Windstar SE. The lock on the passenger sliding door has been on the fritz for about 8 months, usually not unlocking with the power lock switch. Here's the real problem: it is very difficult (near imposible for my wife) to unlock by hand. It requires manipulating the outside handle while pulling up on the lock from the inside (by having the front passenger door open and reaching around--I've come close to dislocating my shoulder pulling up on the lock alone...it just won't unlock that way). Also, the lock does move but even pulling up on it while using the power unlock will not release it. Once it is unlocked, I can easily push it in and pull it back up...until the next time it sticks. (Sounding more and more like a linkage issue the longer I type...) When it works, it works great...as in it seems to have plenty of power to raise the lock, but the times it doesn't are a real chore to get the family out (3 in car seats). Any ideas out there? Or is there a schematic of the inside of the door someplace? Thanks a b'zillion!

The key is getting the door panel off for an inspection. Different years and trim levels can be different. Sometimes the latch handle can have a tricky release procedure. Obviously there is some lock linkage inside the door that needs adjustment. Perhaps an electrical connection. Once inside, you will be able to figure out "what's what".

I've had to do it to mine. Don't remember any particular insights to share with you. A Haynes may be helpful for removing panel.

Thanks 12ounce. I'm a little leary about trying another Haynes book...I spent over an hour changing a tail light bulb in my 96 Taurus once because the book said they come out from inside of the trunk on my model, when in reality the entire tail light assembly must be removed. I haven't really forgiven them yet. Maybe I'll get both a Chilton and a Haynes. Are there any other good automotive brands? If anyone has a step by step procedure for removing the panel that would help. It's a 2000 SE and does not have an auto-opener. Thanks again!

I think the last year for the Chilton's was 98. I know I searched for a 99 Chiltons to compliment my Haynes. I think Haynes bought out Chultons or they merged.

The panel is fairly easy to remove. Look for any screws and remove all you can find. Then the panel will pull straight up. If you try to pull out, you will break some plastic locks that hold panel to door metal.

Thanks! I sprayed some brake cleaner on the moving parts and worked the lock in and out a whole bunch and it seems to be working ok for now. The real test will come the next time my wife drives it. As for the Chilton manual, I found one on Amazon.com for about $30 with shipping...they offered me a credit card and $30 off my next purchase for using their card, so I took the card and paid like 1 cent for the book! I'll probably cancel it next month, but hey...free book! It doesn't ship for up to 3 weeks, but eventually I'll have it and will be eager to help out this forum. Thanks again for all your help!
