1996 ford explorer jbl subwoofer removal

The subwoofer on my eddie bauer explorer failed. I got the inside rearquater panel removed to access the woofer. Is there a way to open the woofer housing to replace it?

JBL Sub Woofer removal

'96 Explorer JBL Subwoofer replacement:

-The subwoofer itself can be removed by screws that mount woofer into enclosure. Screws are found underneath the foam insulation around the outer perimeter of the subwoofer.

**Note: Many people of JBL systems have found (including myself), that the subwoofer is fine, it is the sub Amp. The subamp is overdriven in many cases, due to drivers wanting a little more punch from a small 6.5" sub, so outputs and resistors fry in sub amp unit. I went to a local auto wrecker and paid $40 for the amp, replaced it and sys works fine now. The sub amp is the smaller of the two amps located within the rear right quarter panel next to sub woofer.

Good Luck, email if you have any questions,

David

Re: 1996 ford explorer jbl subwoofer removal

I have a 1995 Eddie Bauer w/ the JBL system and I just replaced my subwoofer yesterday. Unfortunately the panel is not as easy to take off as it looks (or I thought), but I was able to remove it. It was easier to just pull the entire side out and this gave me a little more room to work. The sub is wired the the first amp there is a small lock on the back of the plug to keep it in. Then 4 hex screws on the sub and it's out. I found the JL Audio 6W0-4 was a perfect replacement. Lucky for me the local car audio dealer happened to have one in stock. $80, but it's much better to have that in. I had to modify the wire b/c it needed a little more length w/ the new speaker, but it works like a charm. I was even able to re-use the speaker protector off the old sub. Pryed it off and placed it on the new one.
