Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

(Feel free to move this thread if any of the Mods consider it in the wrong forum, I figured if anywhere the street racing guys could appreciate a good sleeper)

Here's my dilema guys. My new car is being a pain in the ass but thats a story for another time. I can sell it and still pull a nice profit so i'll have a good amount of money for mods. Tell me if this sounds like a really stupid idea. I want a sleeper, something that doesn't look fast at all, but has decent body styling and is a little fun to drive, it has to be new(read as used but nice) and semi-reliable.

My idea was to get a 2003 chevy cavalier that I found, its a 5 speed with a 2.2L ecotec and 30k on the engine. It has decent styling and the ecotec is a decent motor that takes well to a turbo/SC. My friend has a 01 and he was telling me about a 200hp+ cavalier, sounded pretty nice to me I imagine if I left it stock exterior wise besides a 1.5" drop no one would think twice about racing a puny looking cavalier.

With the Getrag german engineered transmission that it has, shifts really smooth I like that too, with a short throw kit it would be nice. I can get the car for around 6300$ that would leave me about 4-5k$ to mod it. Think its a bad idea? Any other suggestions I'm open to also.

Cliffnotes:
1.New car sucks
2.Want a sleeper
3.Thinking of getting a 03 cavalier 5-speed with 30k on it for 6k and than having 4-5k left to turbocharge it

Thats actually a pretty good idea if I could find one in my area within my price range. Last time I checked a few out they were at the cheapest 17-18k i'd go for it in a heartbeat but I'm just trying to avoid financing anything.

The VR4 is actually a sexy ass machine too but when I checked them out last week the only one here had 122k on it and they wanted 9,000$.

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

92-95 Civic VX Hatchback, swap for a B18C1 and TC that little shit. The VX hatch is the lightest model 5th Gen Civic. It should be really inexpensive to purchase one. Competlely unsuspecting.

You can possibly find one for about less than 2 grand easy. The swap should cost you about $3500, and boosting it will probably cost another $1500. Plus you'll still have all that money left over to play with the motor and turn up the boost. Also, suspension, and your brakes can be upgraded too. I am biased to Hondas as well

Very common thing to do, but hey if everyone's doing it, it must be workin' right? Just my .

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

I'm guestimating...never done it myself. Plus, it depends on how much you get the motor for, where you get it, and who can install it for you.

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

Why not get an MR2? You can get one in decent shape for $7k (probably a 91), and with the $3k you have, you can get a new turbo (ATS TD06), exhaust, intake, and MBC. Should run 12s. People underestimate MR2s. Everyone is going to be biased to what they own. Jayson is going to log in, and tell you to go with the Cav. Mr. Lous is going to tell you to get a Camaro/Firebird with an LS1

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

The MR2 is definitely an option I just never looked at it as a sleeper but that might be because a friend of mine has a 91 and I know how quick they are. The styling of it to me just screams fast though.

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

well i'm biased also to what i drive. But i'll tell you what i did. Only if you like domestics. But anyway, i got my car at a junk yard for 3200 dollars. Didn't run very well. Over the course of four years i've spent around 9K on it. New motor, supporting drivetrain. And everything else. Puttin' down a good amount of power to smoke everything i've come across so far. Which would be a twin turbo VR4, 12sec. 340 duster, Cammed LS1, 500HP SRT10 RAM, EVO (at the track), SRT4 (also at the track). However mine is definately not a sleeper. BUT with the right exhaust you can make anything sound stock.

EDIT: I'd say with the amount of money you'll have left over from buying the car would give you some good power. And a decent sleeper you'll have. good luck with it.

*cough* BUICK!!! *cough*

Sorry lately i've just been biased because i've came to the conclusion that i'll never buy anything other than a Buick. Not that i dont like other brands.... I'm just obsessed with Buick.

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

If you're interested in straight perfromance power, I would stick with something American that responds well to mods, maybe a 5.0 or something that you can pick up for really cheap and mod the shit out of it.

Re: Help pick Cl0aks sleeper..

6500 for an 03 cavalier is a rip off. Cavaliers lost all resale value when Gm started giving them away. The most i would pay for an 03 cavalier with 30k miles is 4500.

Also i dont like the 2.2L ecotec engine as much as the Ld9 engine. Having a stock 10:1 compression isnt the most ideal place to start a turbo/blower project.

U want a sleeper, get a grandprix GTP, remove the badges, pulley swap full exhaust, intake, and shift kit, you will be in the 13's.
