Strange idling behaviour

I have a 2002 Nissan Navara and it has just developed a strange behaviour when idling.
Normally, it sits at 800-900rpm when sitting still. Over the last couple of days, I hear a clicking nise from the engine compartment and the revs increase to ~1000. This only happens for around 20 seconds and then it returns to normal. then, about a minute later, it does it again.
This happens continuously. Anyone know what's causing this?

This happens regardless of engine temperature by the way.
Thanks.

The only reason i can think of is the air conditioner. My friends ranger did that. Have you noticed anything with your A/C? Other then that, thats all I can think of.

Many thanks for your reply. It's so funny that you should say this because I only discovered today what the problem was.

In fact, it wasn't a problem, It WAS the AC. As soon as I turned it off, it was fine.

If only you had replied yesterday.
