What to swap into my 96 hatch, your opinions please.

Ok, so I have a 96 dx hatch that I use as a daily commuter. The thing is I about 65 miles a day one way on a one lane highway. What im looking for is a motor that will give me the power too pass those slow poke drivers when I need to. Im thinking of going with a USDM B18B1 mainly for price and smog-ability hear in California. What do you guys think. Also I like the tall gearing on my dx's tranny. Is the B18b1's tranny similar in this gearing? Can a LSD differential be easily put in this tranny? Also has anyone who has this swap in california ran into any smog problems?

Ok thats about all of my questions, and yes I have read the FAQ's but I like real world opinions also.
