89 Deville, AC

AC is low on freon, one guy at shop said when we get some of the old style, when they convert another car, he will pump that in my car. Now another guy in the shop says we should go ahead and put in the new freon( sorry, I can't remember the #'s of each). I asked him how much for the new compressor, he said we don't need one, we will just put in the new style freon. Can we do this?? Just start using the new gas, without any new parts or modifications? The AC has been great for years, just last Summer it started to be less cold, compressor is good they say.

Thanks in advance,

Gene

The old feon is r12 and the new is r134.

You cant put r134 into an r12 system.

r12 runs about 100$ a pound.
r134 runs about 3$ a pound.
If you have a sticker on your evapator (silver thermos looking thing, top left of engine compartment possibly) if the sticker says r12 and r134 capable then I sya its ok to put the new stuff in.
