I understand that you have to take care of your vehicle. However, when you do take care of it and do everything you are supposed to do, and the transmission goes out and then it goes out again and again...We are working on transmission #4 now....hopefully we can pick up our Durango from the repair shop tomorrow. And that is 4 transmissions within a 6 month period!

I've had my 2000 Durango R/T for 5 months. It has 65,000km on it and the tranny (overdrive) just went. Had it rebuilt, picked it up, 20km later it went again. Boogirl26 did you happen to find out just what the problem was? I'm kind of concerned that I may have a lemon.
Thanks. |

It seems the torque converter was the problem the last two times.....we also had trouble with a speed control sensor and another sensor on the second transmission. The shop we used finally ordered a torque converter from Dodge because the other three basically broke and fell to pieces. But.... the original torque converter was manufactured Dodge...so I am not sure why the shop thinks this one by Dodge will be any better. So far, everything is okay, but we are looking to get rid of ours pretty soon. We love our Durango, but we can't afford the repair bills and hassle anymore. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Re: Love My Durango
HUH!!!! I've only had my Durango for 3 weeks, have washed it at least 6 times, and treat it like a baby. However, I've had nothing but troubles with it since the day I drove it home. It's a 2001, 24,000 original miles, and looks like it was just driven from the factory. My check engine light continues to come on, my horn beeps, wipers turn on, and door locks click constantly. At night, my headlights blink franctically. It actually appears to be possessed. Dealer continues to say gas cap. I bought a new one. So, what's the deal? HUH?

Re: Love My Durango
Every car manufacturer has its lemons. Fortunately my 2000 R/T does not have any major problems yet. But I am anticipating a possible tranny failure in the future as the tranny will slip between 2nd and 3rd gear changes under full throttle and redlines my engine when that happens. Already replaced the governor switches under warranty when the tranny was locked in 2nd gear and check engine light came on when this problem occured.

Re: Love My Durango
After the shop replaced the transmission the first time...we had our Durango for a week and then it started red lining when it would switch gears....that is when they said it was two sensors causing the problem...and then they ended up redoing the transmission anyway.....

My Overdrive switched off (light came on) then a second later the "Trans Overheat" light came on. After that, the Durango would not accelerate in Drive when stopped. Only when I dropped it into first would it then move.

Re: Love My Durango
Yep...ours did that too....trans temp light....We asked the shop to put an external trasnmission cooler on the Durango and they refused...saying it was not needed. OUr trans temp light started coming on again after the 3rd transmission and we went ahead and put one on ourselves...it was cheaper than them doing it....Our check gauges light would come on too...Our overdrive light did that the first time and it has been fine since.....I think we just had a little bit of every symptom go on with ours!

Yes, I do love my Durango but I bought it less than 1 year ago with 68k miles and have had several problems. I now have 88k and have maintained it religiously. First was the fan/heater speed switch. Only worked on one speed. Then a power doorlock latch failed. Two power steering hoses failed ($421.24 after I complained about an almost $500 charge), front wheel alignment done 4 times with no improvement. The dealer finally said I must have hit a pothole after last alignment and refused to align it again. At end of last winter heat would not come out on the floor and the selector (floor, a/c, vents, defrost) doesn't really work. Depending on where I put it you get a result, but not the intended one. Dealer said whole dashboard must come out and will be @ $1000.00. I'm thinking of trading in before winter on a Tahoe or Denali. I have always driven Chevys and GM cars and never had this type of continual problems. I'll probably give her one more shot, but if I have more expensive problems I may throw in the towel. Definitly makes me leery of the new Durango.

Not a "Praise" forum
Mike,
I agree with you to some extent, I know seveal people who drive their vehicle like it is disposable, but they do not know any better. I think this group of people mainly gaither here to get answers to problems not to sing praise about their cars. I posted here to get an answer about an issue I was having with my 2000 Durango. All vehicles have issues of some sort, at some time. Im sure you will find a large number of people who love their Durango, I would not have bought one if I did not really want one. I have wanted one for may years now. I pray I do not have any major issues with it but I will be here if I do. I love my durango too! 2000 Silver Durango SLT Plus/Sport Sun roof, Tow package, Custom tires ( put on yesterday ) kick'n stereo and tons of room! I love it. Lisa |

I bought a 1998 Durango SLT Plus new, 5.9 liter with all the bells and whistles. I have had virtually no major problems, I have only had to replace the speed sensor at the transmission twice, once under warranty at 24000 and again at 51000- cost $15.95 for the part.
I haul a small boat frequently, a u-haul periodically, and love the effortless towing of the vehicle. The only problem is gas mileage, but I knew that when I bought it. |

I bought a 2003 Ford Escape LIMITED 4x4 brand new and it turned out to be a Lemon. The transmission went out on it 11 times and Ford REFUSED to replace it so at 37,000 miles we traded it for a 2000 Durango 4x4 with 64,000 miles and I LOVE it ! You get bad apples in EVERY bunch no matter what type of vehicle you have. I'm lucky to where it seems I got a good one with no apparent problems. I prayed over this truck and asked the Lord to Bless it and keep it problem free and running great and it's doing just that !
Does anyone know how much the 2000 4.7 will tow ? I didn't get an owners manual with my truck, it was a one owner truck owned by an older couple and they used it to pull their camper around. I plan on pulling a trailer loaded with everything I own back to Delaware where I'm from and getting out of the south FOREVER !!!!!!!!!! I'm going HOME as soon as my wife graduates college in exactly 1 year, back to the land of 4 seasons and an ocean instead of one long summer and a breath of winter with nothing around except Atlanta 30 miles to the north and endless back roads on all other sides. Are there any Veterans in here ? I need help in knowing what to get for the Tune Up on my 4.7 for the 60k mile TuneUp that it didn't receive but soon will. |
