97' GMC Sierra engine fire???

i was driving down the freeway and suddenly there was smoke coming from the engine when i stopped there was a pretty big fire by the passenger side wheel well coming from the engine the whole engine compartment was destroyed. I know the fire started on the passenger side of the engine. Has anyone heard of this happening to these trucks and any ideas what could have caused it???

That really sucks. What side is your alternator on? During my days at the dealership, I've seen a few engine fires caused by the GM alternator burning down.

my alternator was in the center but towards the drivers side the fire was above and to the back of the tire well on the passenger side

Strange. I'm not sure what would start a fire in that area. Any fluid leaks that you know of that leaked onto the manifold?

Too bad about the fire. Let us know if reach a conclusion on the cause. Truck totalled?
