Question 95 Rodeo - condenser fan question

I've got a 95 Rodeo... 3.2L with air conditioning. It recently started overheating. It only did it when the air conditioning was running AND driving at low speeds/stop and go traffic. From this forum and talking with a friend of mine, I think the condenser fan is not running. The problem is, I can't determine for sure. I did pull the fan off and put 12 volts across it directly.... the fan itself is working. I have the Chilton book on the Rodeo which has the wiring diagram. I see the relay that controls the fan but I can't tell exactly what triggers the relay. It appears to be tied to the AC switch AND to the "electronic thermostat". Some people are telling me it should come on everytime you turn the air conditioning on and some are saying when the air conditioning is on AND the engine is warm. HELP! Does anyone know the exact conditions under which the condenser fan should activate???

Thanks,
Jason

I just recently dealt with the same problem on my 94. All it needed was about a half gallon of coolant added and now I have no problems. Check your coolant level.

Re: 95 Rodeo - condenser fan question

My 96 Passport has the same problem. The condenser fan is not running when the temperature is climbing towards "H", and I think it should be. The engine does not overheat if the AC is not being used. Any answers?

Re: 95 Rodeo - condenser fan question

I had the same problem with my '93 3.2 Rodeo. Low speed/ stop and go traffic with the A/C on and the needle would jump up to H after a short time. The odd thing was it didn't have an electric condenser fan at all. (Manual transmission) It did have a very old fan clutch though. Replaced fan clutch ($59)and problem solved! A/C blows a lot colder now too.

Re: 95 Rodeo - condenser fan question

I've already replaced the fan clutch in my '96 3.2L Passport, and also had radiator flushed, but still overheats. The A/C condenser fan appears to run sometimes (not always) after the engine is warmed up, but noticed it is not running when the temp gets close to or beyond "H". Shouldn't it be?
Looked at the wiring diagram for the condenser fan, and it shows an electronic thermostat and an "A/C pressure Switch" in the circuit as well as the A/C switch. Maybe the pressure switch, whatever that is, is keeping the fan from running. I also checked the relay, and it appears OK. The engine does run cooler without the A/C on.
