V8 into the ole 83

SOme guy has a "like-new" 83 short box.

He wants a whoping $150 for it.

I want to know if a chevy v8 swap has been done on these
trucks and how hard it would be to accomplish.

I know from 84 on it is common, but this is the last year of this bodystyle.

Thanks.

Re: V8 into the ole 83

yeah i thought about it on my 1980 yota, and did it. i put a '75 Le Mans 350 in it. it took some "custom" motor mounts and "custom" body work to fit the beast in but it works

Been done. Advance Adapters has everything you need. What tranny will you use ? The Toy tranny (esp the 83 POS tranny) won't handle a V8.

Re: V8 into the ole 83

You'll need the W56 or W56D. It a good solid tranny. Look over on http://board.marlincrawler.com/index...918&board=14.0
to read up on a bunch of conversions.

700R4 would be better.
Lower 1st gearing and O/D.

Re: V8 into the ole 83

Turbo 350 and 700R4 are almost identical transmissions. The ratios are the only real differance, as the 700R is made for highway and top speed. They are equal in strength. The 350 as a manual cable, where the 700 is like a Turbo 400.

Re: V8 into the ole 83

the internals of a 400 are stronger than a 350...

But 90% of the tranny shops you talk to would recommend the th-350 for performance.

We had a tranny shop build a 700r4 and the first run in the 1968 chevy with a mildly built 327 ripped it to shred... totaly grenaded the tranny. Im talking parts inside of the tranny.. not the clutchs.

My 1970 firebird with a mildly build 396 has a 400 backing it up... my 1988 chevy truck has a 400 behind it... and my s10 will have a th-350.
